Increase pessure settings after drinking wine?
Increase pessure settings after drinking wine?
I'm curious to see if other users increase their pressure settings or switch to auto CPAP mode after drinking alcohol? I don't drink a ton but every now and then I like to go out with friends and enjoy a glass of wine. I've noticed whenever I drink even 1 glass of wine during dinner my AHI for the night spikes higher to at least triple what it normally is. I assume that is because it relaxes my tongue more than normal?

I use auto mode all the time. I do find a little vodka will raise the average pressure for that night. I don't drink often so I have not worried about it. I do know it relaxes the muscles!!

If you are using the machine that is showing in your profile comments then it will automatically make adjustments as needed so you really don't need to change the settings unless you are seeing a HUGE difference in the AHI. You say it might triple but what is tripling? Is it an AHI of 1 that gets tripled to 3 which is nothing to worry about...or is it a MUCH higher amount and if so, in what category of event is the increase?
Sometimes pressure needs do change with alcohol or even pain med intake but not always and if the events do increase then we have to look at what is increasing before deciding what to do with the pressure.

What is your AHI when it triples??? If it goes from .5 to 1.5 I wouldn't be concerned, but, if it goes from 2.0 to 6.0 you need some adjustments.

Alcohol may increase central apnea, which your machine will not treat at any pressure.

Re: Increase pessure settings after drinking wine?
My AHI's are usually .3 and with alcohol it can jump to 1.2 AHI so 4x. I do really feel like crap in the morning when it gets to 1.2 which is why I made a point of asking about the pressure settings...I know 1.2 doesn't seem that bad but to me its a huge difference in energy levels.
I will try the Auto mode and see what happens next time I drink. I'm using AirCurve 10 ASV so it does deal with my central apneas.

The studies on this say that alcohol can make untreated apnea worse. Inconclusive on treated apnea, and no correlation to pressure required for treatment after drinking alcohol.

Effect of alcohol on pressure requirement for CPAP
Results are shown in table 3 and in figures 2 and 3.
Overall, there was no significant effect of alcohol on
recommended pressure (95th percentile) used for CPAP.
