What's the difference in using a regular hose and a heated hose?

Duh....The heated hose heats the moist air. A regular hose doesn't.

A heated hose reduces the chances for rainout. It also allows for transmission of higher humidity levels than what can be obtained from a regular hose. A heated hose also allows for heating the air you breathe so you won't get the cold air feeling.

I hope this helps.

Heated hose can reduce or eliminate moisture condensation within the hose (rainout).....also many people including myself prefer to have warmer feeling air coming in the mask......I hate a cold nose! But primary purpose is to eliminate rainout. When enough moisture condenses in the hose it collects into a puddle and starts gurgling inside the hose......the gurgling is annoying and will usually wake you up, at which point you have to disconnect the hose and dump the water out.....big PIA

I must say I do like LSAT's answer the best, nice and concise

and, wrong.

a heated hose could heat the air a little if you crank it way up, but it's purpose is to keep the inner surface of the hose above the dewpoint of the humidified air, so that it doesn't condense on the tube walls, in the same way that moisture condenses on the outside of a cold glass.

Thank you for the explanation everyone. I was curious because I noticed both options and didn't know if it was necessary to buy the heated hose.

I would recommend going with the heated hose if you can swing it. It solves the problem of "rain out" (moisture condensing in the hose) which gets very bothersome with non-heated hoses.

Using the heated hose can also help when a person wants to maintain the same level of humidity delivery but they wish to change the air temp going to the mask.
Like in the winter my bedroom is cold so I like to warm the air up that is going to my nose....but in the summer I turn the temp down because I don't want the extra warmth. Using the heated hose lets me do that without ever changing my humidity setting.
