New here. Having trouble opening my mouth late in night.

Post by Cubs23 » Fri Feb 20, 2015 11:56 pm

Hi, I'm new here. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in January. I stopped breathing 66 times an hour. I was doing good on my machine the first 3 weeks. Now the past week and a half I have been opening my mouth during sleep, starting about 4 in the morning. Once this starts I wake up constantly to take a drink, and get comfortable again. I bought a full face mask, the ResMed Quattro full face mask. I tried it for the first time last night. I still opened my mouth and had dry mouth all night long. It also would leak around my eyes unless I moved the top strap towards the back of my head, but the strap would slip back up. I have had some vertigo lately also. I'm not sure if that is attributed to my sinuses bothering me lately or what. I don't have my first follow up until this coming Tuesday. Feeling frustrated.

I probably keep my mouth open all night long. You can do that with a full face mask. The only masks you cannot keep your mouth open are nasal masks and mask pillows. You have reduced therapy when you open your mouth with nasal and pillow masks because the air escapes outside your body and it does not enter your body. With full face masks you can open your mouth because the nose and mouth are covered by the mask, so proper therapy occurs. Dry mouth can be uncomfortable to some, but I have learned to live with it.

I also sense that proper sleep (the good sleep) is starting to settle in. This is great! It's amazing how you really start to feel better and your health should improve. Enjoy!

Are you using the humidifier?

Yes, I am using the humidifier at either a 2 or 3. I have never been able to sleep with my mouth open.

I might try that during the day and see if I could handle that, but I'm already claustrophobic. I'm afraid I might wake up in a panic! lol
Last night was a better night of sleeping, I had just one time that I woke up because my mouth was open, but my mouth wasn't too dry. I was able to keep the mask on and go back to sleep. I let my apnea go way to long before I sought treatment, I'm getting desperate for a good nights sleep.

You might try this for dry mouth if your humidifer isn't enough to stop it. http://www.amazon.com/ORAJEL-MOUTH-CHUR ... +dry+mouth

Thanks! I'll look for that at the drugstore. Worth a try!
