My S9 Autoset has failed
My S9 Autoset has failed
And I have no backup machine, as my Respironics System one has also failed. Sigh.
So last week we had a sick kid and I had to move to the guest bedroom, as my MIL came over to help my wife with our son. I unplugged my S9, moved it to the other room, and when I plugged it back in it went into a reboot cycle. Power light flashes on, Resmed splash screen comes up, then it shuts off and does it all over again. I've tried different outlets, wiggling the plug on the power brick, back of the machine, etc. I did some searching of the forums and found some info from it possibly being a problem with the power brick or cord, to it being the machine itself that is broken.
I purchased it in August of 2012 from Second Wind, brand new, so it did come with the 2 year manufacturer warranty, which is of course expired now. However I bought it using my American Express, so I am hoping that I can file a claim under their extended warranty protection.
What sucks of course is being without a machine at all. I have just switched PCPs and I am scheduled for a new sleep study in the middle of march, but it would really be crappy to go without a machine till I can get the new prescription.
Anyone else ever have this happen with their S9? Is it worth trying to find another power cord and brick to see if this is the issue? They are kind of pricy on their own, so I would rather not get one and have it not be the issue. Anyone in the Chandler AZ area with an S9 whom would let me bring my machine over and plug it into their power cord?
Chris

You could go to any DME in the area and try your S9 with their power cord.

in the meantime, contact them, and see if they can offer a suggestion, or maybe a replacement power cord.

Re: My S9 Autoset has failed
This is a long shot -- this procedure worked on a different model for a malfunction that manifests differently, but maybe it will inspire you towards the right path.
I found this PDF on the Apnea Board's private link to documents for registered members: "Fixing Two Dead AutoSet T CPAPs by Richard"
Here's an excerpt:
"...Over the years I’ve seen quite a
few posts about Resmed Autoset T’s dying in the following way:
When you turn the machine on, it cycles through the self-test over and over again. It starts with a
brief display of "Self-Test 1 OK” then starts displaying asterisks. After some number of asterisks
are displayed, it goes back to the “Self-Test 1 OK” message instead of what should happen, which
is to briefly display the firmware version before going to the main menu. ...
Since I am an electronics engineer by profession, I decide to try to fix this machine (I had tried with the
first one, but had found nothing obviously wrong after taking it apart). This time, I decided to
disconnect and reconnect the lithium battery which keeps the internal clock/calendar running while the
machine is powered down. Amazingly, this fixed it! The date was reset to Jan 1st 00 of course, but
now I could plug the machine into my computer and use the AutoScan software to set the time and date
and clear out all the old compliance data. It’s been working fine now since September, 2006, and when
I went through the same procedure with the first dead machine, it was fixed too!"
He then details his procedure; again, it's for a different model.
Good luck...

When you moved it to the other room was the humidifier tank in it with water in it? If so some could of gotten into your machine.rcs914 wrote:I unplugged my S9, moved it to the other room, and when I plugged it back in it went into a reboot cycle.

Yes, clean the humidifier from the water, it can help. Have experienced the same thing myself. Check that the humidifier and CPAP sitting together really.

Re: My S9 Autoset has failed
You can buy a replacement power brick, but that might not fix it. Maybe you can find someone else with an S9 nearby.
You can check craigslist for a replacement. You may have to wait a while to find a good deal, and you'll see a lot of really, really high prices for old, obsolete models.
Have you tried removing the humifier? (Not just the tank, the whole humidifier)? There's a big button on the back that releases it. It doesn't sound like the problem but it's easy to try.

Re: My S9 Autoset has failed
I'd give secondwind a call in the morning. Tell them what it is doing and they most likely will have suggestions. I've never bought anything from them, but they have been very good responding to email from me about various questions.

Re: My S9 Autoset has failed
Thank you for the suggestions. I had tried removing the humidifier first thing, but that made no difference. I am going to meet a member here tomorrow and just do a quick check to see if may be the power brick causing issues. If it isn't, I likely will just purchase a replacement second hand machine from Secondwind, since I already have the humidifier and travel case.
I recently switched insurance so I will make sure that I don't suddenly have a lower deductible for DME. Somehow I doubt it. I know when I got my first machine I had no say in what I got (a system one dumb machine) and the total cost out of pocket was more than what I spent to buy the S9 brand new from second wind ($749 shipped). Live and learn.

Do you know the type of failure for your PR System One?rcs914 wrote:![]()

It might be prudent to plug into a surge suppressor if you don't currently.
