What pressure to set CPAP travel machine?
What pressure to set CPAP travel machine?
Hi everyone. I am new to posting on this forum but have searched here for advice many times. I currently own a Fisher Paykel Icon + Auto for home use. During my sleep study, my AHI was 43. On this machine, my pressure settings are 7.5 minimum and 10 maximum. These settings have gotten me to between .5 and .9 AHI. I recently purchased a F&P Icon Premo for travel (not necessarily because I love my F&P but because I found a great deal). The Icon + and Premo are nearly identical but the Premo is a CPAP with no auto adjusting pressure. I was curious what to set my pressure at on the Premo. I currently run an average pressure of 7.5 to 8 on my Auto machine but I have no way to tell if I ever reach the "10" maximum level. I want to make sure I set the pressure high enough but I don't want to be uncomfortable. Any help would be appreciated.

You can use the SleepyHead software to see where your pressures want to go. It will work with the Icon + Auto.
Otherwise probably 8 or 9 would get the job done but I would look at the software if it were me just to make sure.

You could download Sleepyhead software (link is below in my signature line) it works with the Icon then download your data from the Icon's USB stick into Sleepyhead and then you could see what you pressure actually does during the night on your Auto machine. A good starting place might be the reported 95% pressure that is reported in the software, that figure means that for 95% of the night you were at or below that pressure, and that could be a good starting place for setting your straight CPAP machine.
Use the most recent version of Sleepyhead (9.8.1) as I know it works with the Icon, i use it for my Icon machine.

I didn't mean to repeat Pugsy's post, I was slow typing on my tablet and didn't notice that she beat me to the punch
She should be asleep this late at night anyway

That's okay...I don't mind at all and it's good that you are here to help out since you have first hand experience with the Icon and I don't.TangledHose wrote:I didn't mean to repeat Pugsy's post, I was slow typing on my tablet and didn't notice that she beat me to the punch
I can't do anything on my tablet...I would still be typing an hour from now but on the keyboard I can fly.
You should see my husband laugh at me when I attempt to text on my phone....he says "let's go find an 8 yr old so we can get the text sent sometime before summer gets here"

Re: What pressure to set CPAP travel machine?
Thank you both for your quick replies. I would like to check out Sleepyhead but I do not currently use the USB stick. One came with my Icon but I have never used it. I currently have the "InfoGSM" modem attachment that came with the Icon hooked up to the USB port of the machine. I was told that, eventually, I would be directed to stop using the modem and begin using the "InfoUSB" card that came with the machine. I began using the machine in April of 2014 but nobody has told me to begin using the USB card yet! So as of now, I don't believe I have access to my stats.

Well, you have me a little stumped because I don't have any experience with the GSM modem.
But I don't think the compliance police will come knocking on your door if you disconect the modem for one night and use the USB stick to gather one night of data and then put the modem back after you get the data you need.
Or, Pugsy's sugestion of using 8 cm or 9 cm to start with and see how it goes. Those pressures are somewhat moderate and you might find that you can tolerate 10 cm ok as well. You could start off with 8 cm and check the reported AHI number on your machines screen in the morning to see if that pressure was enough to keep your AHI number where you usually see it, and if your AHI is high, then try a higher pressure until your morning results gets you to a good AHI number.

Re: What pressure to set CPAP travel machine?
That sounds like good advice, I will try that. Thanks again. I am located in Pennsylvania, USA. I'm not sure if the GSM is preferred by my DMS but it came with my machine, as did the USB card. Here is F&P website link if you are curious. https://www.fphcare.com/sleep-apnea/inf ... b/infogsm/

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.
I didn't notice your location until later.......the GSM thru me a bit because its more common in areas outside the States, but T-Mobile and AT&T also use GSM in the States so your modem is most likely using one of those carriers.

Re: What pressure to set CPAP travel machine?
I find it unusual that the modem would still be on the machine since April 2014. Most insurance companies don't need any compliance data (which is usually what the DME is getting from the modem) past 3 months and some not even that length of time. Maybe the DME forgot about it.
You might check with the DME and/or your insurance company to see if it is even needed now.

Re: What pressure to set CPAP travel machine?
I think I will check with them Pugsy. They may have forgotten. I have an appointment with my DME tomorrow or next week to get fitted for a nasal pillow setup so I can ask then. I started with the nasal mask, then full face, now getting fitted for nasal pillow. Not sure what I prefer yet.
