Experience with the AirSense 10???

Post by lindalrc » Fri Feb 13, 2015 3:20 pm

Probably time for both me and my spouse to get new machines. We are both using ResMed 8 Elites now with mine new in 2008 and his in 2010. The provider has suggested the ResMed AirSense 10 with the humidifier and heated hose and will give us those if the doc specifies them - so no provider problems. Doc says, "Tell me what you want." I would love to hear any comments on this machine.

Background: We are in cold New England and set the furnace to 56°F at night. I use a humidifier currently but do not have a heated hose and have the rainout issue if I set it too high. He never has used a humidifier, but with the dry winter air is having sinus problems. He went on CPAP in 1994 and I in 2010, so we are fully compliant and have found the right masks and adapted just fine. No compliance issues.

Thanks in advance for your time. Lindalrc

Resmed makes very good machines and they have evolved a lot since you got your S8. The Airsense 10 comes in a CPAP, Elite, Autoset and Autoset for Her models. The best are the Autosets because they not only provide data, but also can adjust to your changing needs for pressure as you change position or enter different stages of sleep. The Elite is data capable and is a single pressure CPAP. The CPAP is a brick...don't get that one.

Of the lot, the Airsense 10 Autoset For Her is the best, even for him. It is the most full featured and is frequently discussed here on the forum. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... idair.html. Even better with the Climateline hose that will warm the air and prevent condensation.

I have the AirSense 10 APAP and while it's the only CPAP machine I've ever owned, I have found it to be a solid machine in the six or so weeks I've had it. As Sleeprider points out, the ClimatelineAir hose is a good addition and while I've had to turn off the Auto Climate features due to my own crazy nose, when they were on it seemed to be flawless control of humidity and temperature.

Happy machine shopping!

I replaced an S9 AutoSet in November with the Airsense Autoset. It's a good solid machine, no problems with it. If you go that route be sure and get the heated hose option (ClimateLineAir)' not only for rainout control but also for its sweet 90 degree swivel mounting, very convienent design and it allows for a more natural hose connection than the standard hose.

The Airsense has a built in cellular modem that can transmit summary/compliance data or you can leave the wireless off if you don't want to transmit that data.

The built in humidifier is a nice improvement also, easy to fill and clean.

As mentioned above the base model Airsense CPAP does not record detailed or high frequency flow data so it's the least favorable model. The AutoSet for her has an additional auto algorithm that is a bit less aggressive in its pressure adjustments and many guys will even go for that model because some guys will also benefit from the "for her" auto algorithm and you would still have the standard AutoSet algorithm available as well......the for her model is white with a bit of a flower motif on it instead of the others that are black, but it might be the best one to have in terms of the additional for her algorithm, more bang for your buck. I went with the black AutoSet model as the standard AutoSet mode was fine for me.

I have the A10 Auto with the ClimateLine Air tube. We keep the room around 65 at night during the winter. I haven't had issues with condensation in the tube, but depending on your humidity setting and mask, you might still get moisture in the mask itself. The heated tube will definitely help keep the air warmer longer, though. My A10 has been a solid machine. It does its thing and I don't have to fight it or even really think about it; the way a CPAP/APAP machine *should* work, IMO.

This machine is my newest, and nicest machine.
The only thing I would change are the automatic screen dimmer, (too dim, no levels, and cannot be adjusted or turned off.)
Resmed, of course always runs off proprietary plugs with 24 volt DC current--not very friendly for off-grid use.
This is not an issue for me, but may be for others.

sounds like a good first use for the new firmware upgradeability feature.

Which my DME will have no clue how to install, of course!
(((Maybe they will, if I give them more free tech help.)))

Firmware upgrade? Is that what the following refers to?

"Software upgrade
The device has a software upgrade feature. When a software upgrade is in progress, the screen will flash for approximately 10 minutes."

Probably not referring to AirView...

When do you think we'll start seeing AirSenses on Craigslist? What would be a good price?

They are showing up on Craigslist. So far I see an Autoset in Philadelphia at $800, Greensboro NC at $750, Raligh-Durham at $450 and $500, both autoset gently used, Ashville, NC at $500, Fayetteville at $300

You get the point. Lots are already on Craigslist, you just have to figure out how to search and get them. I use Search Tempest program which lets you pick up all the Craigslists around the country.

There's some more info in the links in my signature line below.

Avoid the AirSense 10 "CPAP" model. Get at least the "Elite." It will say "AirSense 10 XXXXXX" in the lower right corner of the front of the unit. XXXXXX will be CPAP, Elite, AutoSet, or AutoSet for Her.

Get the doc to specify at least a small pressure range. AutoSet for her is the best if you can get it, even for guys. The AutoSet is nearly as good, just missing a few minor features. The Elite is an excellent fully data capable manual CPAP. The "CPAP" model has some useful data, but the Elite is enormously better.
