Still stop breathing

Post by ronMonster » Mon Feb 09, 2015 11:14 pm

Tonight is night three with CPAP. I fell asleep quickly and was woken up when I stopped breathing, time after time. This is what happened before started CPAP. Does it take while to stop happening?

I set my settings to 11 like doctor said, should turn it up? I don't see the doctors for another month.

thanks
Ron

Without seeing a report, it's virtually impossible to figure out what's going on with your sleep and events.
Which machine do you have and is it fully data-capable?

My model is
REMStarPlus M Series Model #1022334
With a useless humidifier that neither warms nor humidifies.

No data.

I thought that waking up in a panic as soon as you fall asleep was part of apnea and would go away with a clap.
But it sounds like that might another issue.
If I'm not making sense it's because I've not slept two days and kinda at the end of my rope.

sorry for the hassles

Welcome to the cpaptalk board

you are making sense ... it probably is apnea .... but without data there is no way anyone can give you any suggestions to improve your therapy .

sounds like you are having a very bad time getting started with the therapy
first machine broken ... second machine a brick (meaning no data).

what was the diagnosis of your sleep test ... do you have a copy of it ?

it is up to you to decide ... but raising the pressure is probably what you need.

Sorry to hear you're "flying blind".
The problem with increasing pressure is that you don't know what type of events they are. If they're Central Apneas, increasing pressure MAY make them worse. But Centrals aren't that much more serious than Obstructives, so you might try increasing pressure and see what happens.
Actually, some Centrals are experienced by some users as they fall asleep and just before waking.

I know my insurance won't cover any more sleep tests. So no data there.
They just said "severe sleep apnea set your machine to 11 and you have a $1,500 deductible" Bought one on criagslsit.

REMstar Plus M series

I knew I would have to face my claustrophobia, I did not expect such a severe reaction with my sinuses, it feels like I'm in kicked in the throat, and a headache that won't go away.
All of these are going to get a lot worse once I lie down.

I hate to be the one to tell you this .... you are probably gonig to need a different cpap ... that is data capable.
That is the only way you are going to be able to self titrate your pressure.

I think the Doctor said it was obstruction, I've had 4 surgery were they basically Roto-Rootered out my throat. It worked for about 10 minutes.
The best sleep is just a humidifier. Sooner of later I'll need to get some sleep I might take a break from CPAP to get some sleep. I commute 4 hours a day and without sleep it's a scary ride.

If your machine has a ramp feature, I suggest you turn it off. That feature is commonly used, and commonly the problem when people describe having events as soon as they doze off. Are you using the ramp?

It is also just possible that you are one of those people who don't do well on autopap, but just need a fixed Cpap pressure as the autos actually wake you up as they try to deal with individual apneas. Can you turn your machine to straight Cpap mode (at what you feel might be the pressure you most likely stay at most nights) for 1-2 nights and see if you feel any better?

Julie the Remstar Plus M series is a fixed cpap machine...it doesn't have auto adjusting apap mode available.

Very possibly simply from the non functioning humidifier if it isn't working.
While there are some people who can get by just fine without any or minimal added humidity, there are a lot of people who simply can't do that because their nasal mucosa and sinuses need more moisture.
You can get a working humidifier for the M series machine from secondwindcpap.com http://www.secondwindcpap.com/Used_CPAP.html for $70 but if at all possible it would be better to put that money towards a full data model machine with a working humidifier.
