CPAP infrared blinking

Post by Caf » Sun Feb 08, 2015 8:07 am

Hi,

I have a IP camera, infrared capable, and a Resmed S8 AutoSet II.
With the camera on infrared, I saw the CPAP keeps blinking infrared signals all the time.
From top left corner, front face.
Does anyone know what s that or what s that for?

Thanks
(:)s CAF

Heat, probably on the control board. It's cool that you can see that.
Do not be afraid; it's only electronics doing what they do.

so that's NOT the signal to the Mothership to "beam me up?"

Well, if your insurance company is from very, VERY far away . . .

It is not ‘heat’ if you are seeing it with a normal (visible light) camera that has extended IR range. Most electronic cameras are sensitive to near IR; you actually have to put special filters in them to keep them from being sensitive to near IR. These cameras will pick up signals from Infrared remote controls, infrared LEDs and certain types of lasers but they can only see really hot sources of heat, like just below red hot (literally!).

You are probably seeing some sort of receiver-transmitter data link. I have no idea what it would be for.

The legacy Respironics use infrared to communicate between the blower unit and the heated humidifier. Does it look like the flashing light is pointed at the humidifier? Do you have the humidifier? Is it coming out of the little "window" on the front face?

I've never held an S8 machine in my hands. Looking at the pictures, they might be doing the same thing.

Unless he's got a really expensive specialized IR camera, it won't see electronics at "normal" electronics temperatures. I suspect he's got a security type camera with infrared LED's and "night vision." The infrared cameras that can see heat like that tend to be mucho expensive.

BTW, take a picture and post it if you can.

Any electronic component that gets warm is radiating infrared, resistors, transformers,
and whatever needs a heat sink.

true, but that's more in the far infrared, which takes much more expensive sensors to detect, vs near infrared, that most any camera without an IR filter can pick up.

Many electric components make and give off heat, they only need heatsinks if the heat buildup poses a issue. Many times the heat is harmlessly given off to the environment, no heat sink needed. In this case, it's blinking meaning it's turning on and off (switching or controlling something). Jim

The wavelength and intensity of the infrared produced depends on the temperature. For instance, as you heat up a piece of iron, it will start to glow in a dull red, then get more orange and bright, and eventually get white hot.

Similarly, in infrared, relatively cool objects emit less infrared, and emit it at longer wavelengths. Relatively cheap infrared cameras, such as your home security infrared cameras, can only see the "near infrared" that would come from really hot objects, or from LED's. The cheap security "night vision" cameras usually have infrared LED's to illuminate the scene. They won't see hot objects unless they're a lot hotter than components in your CPAP machine.

The neat, "heat camera" pics you see on TV used by the military and industrial use are usually more expensive than the cheap security cameras. They are getting cheaper, but I suspect caf's camera is only sensitive to the near infrared.

I could be wrong about cal's camera. The "thermal" infrared cameras are getting cheaper and more common. They're getting a little more common for industrial and security usage.

And to pay the dog tax, here's a thermal infrared dog pic.

Image

Gee, now I need to pull out my infrared camera and play with it.

Edit: Here's a pic of infrared wavelength vs. temperature. Note how far past the red the stove is at 500K (400F).

Hmmm... that image doesn't seem to want to display. Try this if it doesn't show up.
