7.5 hours and feelin good

Post by C-Man » Sat Jul 29, 2006 8:56 am

Last night was the first night in exactly two weeks to the day since I bought the UMFF that I actually woke up this morning with the thing on. Wow, just shows that patience with the thing works. Now if I can just remember the exact position I had the mask for tonight???? I was overjoyed to look at the display results on my S8 autovantage that said the mask fit was excellent and my highest pressure was 15 and I wore it for 7.5 hours. Awesome. By the way I had four pieces of pizza about two hours before I went to sleep, maybe all of that carbohydrate put me into some extra sleep like state where I ignored the leaks in the first couple of hours??? Who knows but 7.5 hours and I'm feeeling good.

Patience can help

Post by Pad A Cheek » Sat Jul 29, 2006 9:55 am

Great that you have had some success with your set up. It does take perserverance to be successful in this world of the hose heads.

Keep up the great sleep and Keep posting to encourage those who would be discouraged with early results.
I have been CPAPing for 2 years+ and would not even think of trying to sleep without it. It makes all the difference in the world.

Remember sleep debt has to be repaid, so it may be a gradual process of gaining the energy that XPAP treatment can give you. Patience is a virtue.

fighting with mask leakage

Post by kparlee » Sat Jul 29, 2006 10:14 am

Hi there. Thanks for your posts. It is nice to know I'm not the only one who is frustrated. I just started on the CPAC machine last night for the first time at home. I was excited about the possibilities and benefits I kept hearing about by using the CPAP but after a night of fighting with the mask for 2 hours while lying in bed and waking up several times to make adjustments to get rid of the whistling and howling the mask makes, I'm not too happy.

It is nice to know this board is here so I can hopefully get some tips and tricks and insights into how to live with this unit. I can safely say I was tempted to toss the mask I just bought out the window and get some normal sleep without the machine. I stuck with it but by 5am this morning at full pressure, I just had to turn it off.

I'm wondering if the pressure that the sleep lab set me at (17 cm) is set way too high. I made a point of asking my supplier about this yesterday when I bought the mask and as I understand it, they don't come by this number haphazardly.

When starting at night at low pressure before the ramp up, the mask is fine but it seems that when the pressure starts to increase, that's when the mask starts leaking. I understand that the mask shouldn't be on too tight but how tight is enough? Shouldn't the mask not leak at all...isnt' that the reason I went through 2 hours of trying on different masks at my supplier? I eventually settled on the Respironics ComfortFull 2 Large from my Medigas supplier (for whom I got a 10% off coupon from the sleep lab).

From reading other posts, I can now understand why some people have different masks they try out from day to day. One would think that with this technology they could figure out a way to get a mask that wouldn't leak. Is the Hybrid I've been reading about the answer?

Ken,

The thin layer of the silicone on your mask is supposed to inflate with the pressure and make a better seal.
I have found for me at least this doesn't work because of the high pressure so the only option left is to crank down the straps.
I had the ComfortFull 2 as my first mask and liked it a lot except for the fact that it would make a sore on the bridge of my nose within two nights of using it.
I am using the hybrid now and am amazed at how loose I am able to wear it.
If you can tighten your straps and not have any sores develope you should be in good shape with the ComfortFull 2.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!
