Help-I really want to like my ResMed AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow

Post by bkafrick » Sun Jan 04, 2015 10:34 pm

Hi - been a CPAP user for about 2 years now... and my DME originally gave me a Fisher and Paykel Nasal Mask (https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... -mask.html). I used this for the first 18 months, and then after carefully reading reviews of alternatives, decided to try a Nasal Pillow Mask.

My biggest beef with the Fisher mask was that it left decent marks on my face and head due to it being tightened down.

After receiving the AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow Mask, I fell in love with it. Quiet, comfortable, no marks! This was everything I wanted it to be... except for the fit. I tried all three sizes of nasal pillows, and settled on the Medium. It fit great, but its not a tight seal if I move around at all. So, during the night, I get decent leaks. Using Sleepyhead, I can see can get often up to 5 and occasionally in the teens and in the 20s. When I was using the nasal mask, I never ever had it go over 5. Ever. Most nights, the leak rate on the nasal mask was below 0 and 1.

Now, looking at my AHI index, its exactly the same between the two masks. I've been very pleased that I keep in in the 1-2 AHI range every night. Even with the leaks on the Nasal Pillow mask! But, I can tell that I'm not nearly as well rested the next morning, and am not sleeping as long.

So, despite the excellent AHI index, I'm thinking of going back to the Nasal Mask. But I really hated the marks it left.

Any advice? Should I try a different Nasal Pillow mask? One I could possibly tighten down? Seems the AirFit P10 was the most popular one on cpap.com - hence why I went with it.

Thanks!

This is one of the reasons I decided to use the clips I am offering as a holiday gift. I found that if I secured the mask hose on the P10 to my clothing I could better control the mask when I moved since it wouldn't get pulled by the hose. I'd be happy to send one if you'd like to try it.

Go to this link http://www.resmed.com/us/dam/documents/ ... er_eng.pdf and make sure you are fitting the pillows in your nose correctly and adjusting the straps correctly. Especially look at the first set of pictures picture #2. See how the pillows are aimed upward into the nostrils and not straight on? Put the pillows in your nose first then put the straps on, it makes a huge difference in how the P10 fits. I was putting the whole shebang on wrong until I looked at this, now it's very comfortable and little to no leaks. Good Luck, hope this helps.
(the link says p10 her, but obviously the instructions are the same if you're male or female)

This is interesting. I'll have to try this tonight! I have no idea if I'm fitting it correctly. Thanks!

I'd try one night with the large pillows just to see how they work. I found the medium "fitted" but were not stable. I don't need hose clips as I'm a hose hugger and kind of move it around with me. Definite side sleeper.
