Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
Rain out in the mask can happen despite everything and anything we do because of the moisture in our own breath going into the mask when we exhale and even if you didn't use a humidifier at all it could still happen. It's moisture laden air in a small space and the cooler bedroom air cools the mask air and oops..it can't hold the moisture anymore..
It is caused by a combination of factors and not any one factor.
If it was just the hose...hose cozy might help but I got rain out in my mask even with a hose cozy because of the combination of moisture in my own exhaled breaths and colder bedroom in the winter.
There are ways to help insulate nasal pillow masks but not full face masks. A mask liner might help absorb some of the condensation so it doesn't get on your face and be so annoying. Maybe make a mask liner out of an old T shirt?
Got any old worn out tube socks laying around...those nice sort of thick ones with maybe holes in the heels or toes?
If so make the toe holes bigger and slide them over the hose and make your own hose cozy and secure with bread ties or zip ties or even scotch tape. It's not real pretty but it works.
When you had a hose cozy was it a really good one from Padacheek or one of the lighter ones? She makes a nice one but it's pricey and for not much more you could get a heated hose...the stand alone Hybernite 2300. It helps a lot. I used one myself.
If you choose to try to make your own with some socks or whatever....make sure the insulation goes as far up the long hose to the mask connection that you can get.
The air in the mask (or hose) has to stay warmer so it doesn't release the water...it's physics at work. Either make bedroom air warmer or air in the mask and hose warmer some how.
Is money tight right now? I might have a hose cozy laying around somewhere that you could have.....but I have pets and I know the cat has been in the drawer where the hose cozy is probably hiding. I will of course wash it but if you are sensitive to animal dander...you know washing isn't the greatest fix.
It's one of the Padacheek really nice cozies with the zipper.
Just let me know if you want it and in the meantime...do what you can to insulate the hose in an attempt to keep the air warmer going to the mask and maybe use a mask liner to absorb any condensation so it at least doesn't give you a cold shower.

My husband's cap is so old we do not even have the manual or know where the humidifier is on it. 'Oct mess' is a typo where the program on my tablet anticipates words instead of what I type and I did not catch it. It was spoked to say 'another type of mask' as shown on my latest profile. Thanks.

Thanks for all the advice! This morning so far is fine...I took nighttime Nyquil last night and used the cpap with humidifier set on 1 again, hose under the covers, NO RAIN! Guess the cpap humidifier is temperamental as I did it all just like before except the Nyquil.

Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
I have been a CPAP patient for two to three years. About two months ago I started having severe allergy symptoms--sneezing, watery eyes, nose, going through Kleenex constantly. I do have allergies but a single Zyrtec has kept me on the straight and narrow for many years. I also have Flonase but it doesn't seem to do much. I don't understand what happened but I believe it is related to the CPAP machine. I currently have the humidity set at 0.5 and don't think I need any more than that, do I? Some of the posts I've read mention sinus rhinitus but this all happened at once. I thought it was a cold coming but my sinuses are full and the discharge is clear so it is not an infection. Does anyone know what is going on here and HOW do I get back to where I was before? Steve

You must take local conditions into account with a humidifier... if it's suddenly dry there because you're using central heat you may need more hum., but if you're in e.g. Seattle in spring, you'll obviously need none (or relatively). You have to go by what's ambient in your house along with weather. No one else can tell you what to use unless they're there.

I didn't think I would need more humidity since it is all in my sinuses. But I did lower the humidity probably just around the time all of this started happening. Would you think I should raise it? I am sneezing and blowing my nose and water runs everywhere even from my eyes the way it is now. I don't think the apartment heat is an issue yet .Julie wrote:You must take local conditions into account with a humidifier... if it's suddenly dry there because you're using central heat you may need more hum., but if you're in e.g. Seattle in spring, you'll obviously need none (or relatively). Are you cleaning/changing your air intake filters?SteveMP170 wrote:I have been a CPAP patient for two to three years. Are you using distilled water?
Are you doing nasal cleansing before bedtime?
When do you typically get these symptoms?
Have you tried NOT taking the drugs?
Usually about a half hour or less after I get up, my sinuses "drain", I blow my nose, and all is well. Been that way ever since I started therapy and I consider having my sinuses clear a "good" thing. I don't have the sneezing and watery eyes, but can't remember back 9+ years ago to whether those things were present then. By the way, I use NO heat....."passover", cool humidification year round.

Just try lowering it for a few days (to let things clear up) and SEE what happens. You don't need our opinions to do that.
Re: Severe Sinus from Humidifier on Cpap
I've learned that the rain problem is worse with the full face mask. When I switched to the AirFit F10 with the cup over nose I had no problem with rain out when I had the hose covered. Since then I have had a problem with the hose, it had a small hole in it, and was not providing the pressure I needed. Nothing to do with the rain problem. But since I got a new hose and not put the cozy on it, there is rain in the cup.
When I had the sneezing and heavy sinus problem I did not use the cpap for one night and it went away by the next morning.
