Just Curious...

Post by piperjoe68 » Fri Jan 02, 2015 11:34 am

My wife has recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and just got her CPAP machine today. Her number of incidents per hour was 132 and her oxygen level would drop to 66%. The tech who set her up with her machine said it was the worst she'd ever seen. I was just curious to see what other folks feedback on that was.

Interestingly, though, her air flow pressure was much lower than mine - like 10-12 pounds or something. Mine is 18-24. Clearly this means that the intensity of the apnea is not necessarily tied to the amount of pressure required to reduce the incidents.

Anyhow - just thought I'd toss all this out there.

You're right - the amount of pressure needed to keep anyone's particular airway open is not related to the severity of apnea, the number of events they have per hour or overnight.

I've heard that hundreds of times in the forum and "in real life".

It is extremely severe - mine was like that. However not that unusual.

And you are correct pressure requirements have nothing to do with severity. My pressure has been between 7 and 10 for years.

From the other side, my AHI was only 15 (only 8 with the ApneaLink) and the only time my pressure is below 10 if asleep is if I've just fallen asleep and it's in the process of zooming up to the teens!
