OT - Cheap over the ear headset that works for Kindle

Post by 49er » Mon Dec 15, 2014 7:26 am

Recently, I received a light weight over the ears headset for my Kindle Fire (1st generation) that unfortunately doesn't work even though I thought I did adequate research to make sure it did. Much to my horror when I woke up in the middle of the night, the sound from the Kindle could be heard completely in spite of the headset being plugged in.

So if someone has a suggestion for an equivalent replacement, I would greatly appreciate it. Sound isn't important at as all I care about is comfort when I lie down to sleep. And I don't want to spend a fortune on them.

Have been purchasing cheap in the ear headphones from CVS but they don't last long and once I set the position, they easily slip out. I also want to stay away from ear bud headphones since they seem to push the wax further down in my ears even when I swear I am being careful.

Thanks!

I have a pillow speaker that lays below my pillow. Would that work for you?

Many years ago (meaning decades) I got what was termed a 'pillow speaker' with a clock radio I purchased. The speaker has lasted longer than the radio. Basically a small 2x3 flat speaker you placed under your pillow. With the sound properly adjusted, you can just hear it when laying on the pillow, but your bed partner normally can't. (Depends on your togetherness.) I like it because there are no additional wires or headgear attached to me (I have enough already) and typically don't feel it through the pillow.

Just a thought.

I use a pair of Maxell NCII headphone occasionally with my phone for sleeping ASMR. Theses are over the ear headphones, very light weight. I've had them for years.

I hate ear buds. You can get them in the $19 - $29 range if you look good. Note the have noise canceling as well.

I got a set of them recently for my daughter.

SleepyInIndy and Janknitz, I feel really silly but I am not sure how the speaker pillow works. Tried looking at pictures but I am not getting the picture. So any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks though for your suggestions.

Krelvin, thanks, I will check out the headphones you suggested. Good to know they have lasted for years.

Pillow speaker is just a speaker that you put under a pillow. The volume is low so you only hear it typically when you are lying on the pillow, best if you have one ear to the pillow. Monaural, so no stereo but that might be fine.

A person could put the guts of a working pair of headphones under your pillow;
this may work better with some pillows than others.
Ear buds would not have enough power, as would some headphones.

Would that connect to my Kindle? It looked that way in the pictures but I wasn't sure.

Sorry for what may be elementary questions.

Most of the ones I've seen are just a flat looking speaker which have a wire that has a typical 3.5mm small phone plug in them.

Doing a quick look, it appears you can also buy a pillow with a speaker in them, but if you already have a pillow, I don't know why you would do that.

Mine actually has two speakers so I get somewhat stereo sound. But it doesn't work that great through a memory foam pillow. I usually lay the speaker on the top ear when sleeping on my side. they work great with regular pillows.

I've also seen soft headbands that have speakers built in so they are over your ears.

Anything with a standard plug should work with your kindle.

I guess they fixed that headphone jack problem cuz my new Kindle Fire works just like anything else with a headphone jack. Sadly, mine doesn't have a micro data port anymore (like a regular/micro USB), or any way to get download data like word docs or whatever into the unit, other than a tedious WIFI download process.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Sounds like an (adjective judged too graphic) ipad.

Thank you all again for your responses. A forum member has generously agreed to send me a pillow speaker that this person no longer uses.

I think I now know how they are used. LOL!
