Sleeping with mask during hot weather :(

Post by Valkyria » Sat Dec 13, 2014 8:01 am

Im laying here trying to sleep right now and I can feel the sweat running on my face where the Mask touch my skin, Im having both ac and ceiling fan on but it seem to give little relief. Before "the mask" i used to turn ac on 30 min before sleep then off. Now its on chewing energy all night coz i cant stand the heat with it on my face. Please note I live in the tropics so its around 25-27c at night with 70-90% humidity. Since summer really hit, i also have problems with feeling claustrophobic while wearing mask. Since I'm a new hose head i really could need ideas from seasoned users.

Speaking from the frozen northern hemisphere, it sounds like a nice problem to have right now.

Understandable that it is uncomfortable. Have you tried a nasal pillow type mask? Are you using heated humidification?

AC should pull down ambient humidity and temperature enough that you should be comfortable with the ceiling fan. Your face will not feel the relief of that air if you're using a full face mask, so if you are able to use a nasal pillow, I think you would be much more comfortable.

I live in AZ where we have high temps but low humidity..

None the less I do feel the heat even with A/C.

I have for years..decades used a face fan..I used a PWM control so I can control its speed..

And I find it also helps cool my head even with my full face mask.

Here is a picture:

Hope this helps.

I live in the subtropics with about the same conditions you report for several months each year. I keep the air conditioner about 22C at night. What is your A/C temp?

Are you using the CPAP humidifier? I don't need it at all and have detached it and put it in a drawer for when I travel to dry regions.

If you are using the CPAP humidifier, that may be your problem.

Unless you have lived in the tropics, you have no idea what she is dealing with.

I have had summer visitors from AZ who got exhausted here at lower temps but with humidity approaching 100%.

What equipment are you using?
Are you using a heated hose?
What is your humidifier setting?

Somebody on here ran their hose through a styrofoam ice chest filled with ice to cool the air. Also, there are masks made mostly with fabric that should be more comfortable than the silicone.

A fabric liner for your mask will help with the sweat. You can make a quick one out of an old 100% cotton tshirt. Just lay the mask on it and raw around it adding about an inch or two. Then cut out the holes needed starting too small and adjusting until it works. Once you have a working model make a pattern out of heavy paper.

Padacheek has a website where she sells various lines.

Thanks for your ideas so far. sheffey is right its more the humidity then the heat that is a problem. The wet weather has not yet started and the humidity is still building up, so my problem will only become worse. Last night i had a shower before bed and dried my face off and before i got to bedroom which is like 10 steps away my face was wet again from the humidity. I use a resmed 10 machine with the humidity turned off and the air is set on cool. My mask is a Resmed AirFit™ N10. Im unsure how that mask will work with a liner as it has a "soft seal". Has anybody tried the liners with soft seals? The ac is set on +25c anything cooler and the rest of my body freeze perhaps I need to go and try to find a "summer mask" that I can use with liners. I however got to say that thought isn't very uplifting, as I tried about 5-6 masks including nasal pillows before finding this mask that suits me

Could you use a room dehumidifier along with you AC to help.

Most masks will work with liners. For many people a liner is the only way to wear a mask due to their skin reacting to being sealed in. Just try it.

no real need once ac is running, it's only my face that is sweating from mask.

Both Remzz liners and PadaCheek work with the N10. I like the PadaCheek because it stays on until you need to wash it. But if you are sweating enough that you would need to change frequently you can make your own or use Remzzz. The silicone on the N10 irritated my face and I was getting air leaks in my eyes and the liners helped both.

I have since changed to the P10 and it is much lighter with less on the face. Sometimes I wake up at night and hardly notice it on my face. If my nostrils get sore I sometimes go back to the N10 to give them a break but the P10 is my first choice.

Like the previous poster I live in Arizona. Have a ceiling fan on in summer along with the AC. May want to turn off or even remove your humidifier. Maybe that would make it more comfortable?
