Brand new user with sore nose!
Brand new user with sore nose!
Hi there! I was diagnosed last week with severe OSA and put on a CPAP with a nasal mask. I am not tech minded and all this is new to me, so I'll do my best to make sense. I am having massive trouble getting a good fit. The mask feels nice and comfy while sitting up but as soon as I lie down the mask becomes uncomfortable. I've only had it two nights and the area directly under my nostrils is sore. I'm not sleeping at all, but not using it isn't an option. During my test last week my oxygen level at one point was down to 64%. Any advice very welcome!
Re: Brand new user with sore nose!
Can you tell us exactly which model mask you are using?
Brand and model name?
Brand and model name?

Lansinoh. Smear it on your nostrils. Works wonders. Highly purified lanolin in the breast feeding section.

Do you think he ought to get his mask sized and adjusted properly? Or just leave it as is and slather on Lansinoh cream every night?

MsCJBC will no doubt be surprised that you've given her a free sex change operation.Midnight Strangler wrote:Do you think he ought to get his mask sized and adjusted properly? Or just leave it as is and slather on Lansinoh cream every night?

Yes, MsCJBC is a female, no surgery was involved, and my having given birth assures me that my parents weren't keeping a surgical secret from me. Lol
I am using a Mirage Softgell mask.

Re: Brand new user with sore nose!
Have you watched the fitting video for this mask?
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -mask.html
You can see it at the above link.
You need to do the final fitting laying down and not sitting up because the face changes once we are reclining.
If it is causing pain near the nostrils...probably either straps are too tight or the wrong size.
There are better nasal cushion masks IMHO...have you looked at other masks?
This one is a ResMed nasal cushion mask that is a fairly new model. The softgel mask is a much older style mask.

Re: Brand new user with sore nose!
Thanks, I'll try messing with it tonight again. I did manage to get it in a semi comfortable position a bit ago, guess we will see when I try to sleep if it stays comfortable. Could I ask about the best pillow position, slight elevated or totally flat? Is it easier to adapt on the back or the side?
Unfortunately, I have barely there medical coverage and I have no say in the mask I can have.

Re: Brand new user with sore nose!
That's a load of crap. Insurance companies pay by HCPCS code and not model. The DME is pawning off old out moded stock and telling you your insurance won't pay for anything else. It's cheaper than the newer masks and that's why they are pushing it.MsCJBC wrote:Unfortunately, I have barely there medical coverage and I have no say in the mask I can have.
That mask was old style when I started cpap therapy over 5 years ago.
They also probably didn't tell you that the mask manufacturers all offer 30 day trials of their masks and if it won't work for a person then they can swap it out for something else.. DMEs can do it...but it involves extra paperwork for them to do to get credit for the mask that didn't work.
Do you have other DME choice options available with your insurance? If you do...take your mask business elsewhere. They aren't doing right by you.
I have some bits and pieces of a nice nasal pillow mask...this one

I am missing the headgear but I know where you can get the headgear for not much money. I would be happy to send you the short hose and nasal pillows (I have new unused in all sizes) and if you get the headgear you would have a really nice mask that is extremely popular for not much money and then you can tell that DME to go jump in the lake.
I will send you a private message in a couple of minutes about the headgear.
What I would send you is free.

Re: Brand new user with sore nose!
If you can, you might want to try the cloth elan mask listed in my equipment profile. It is very comfortable and I have had absolutely zero problems after going through months of what I would describe as full face mask h-ll because many of them hit my nasal area in the wrong way even though I know I had the right size and it was fitted correctly.MsCJBC wrote:Hi there! Re: Brand new user with sore nose!
Another point that's not been mentioned yet is the possibility that your pressures are off.
Were you prescribed fixed pressure or is your machine on "auto"?
My situation was basically that the pressures were set so high that I was having mask problems and not feeling rested. Turns out that my pressures should have been about half of what was prescribed. By going with lower pressures, I was able to use a less massive/invasive mask.
Not saying this is your situation but something that should be considered.
It would also help if you could post some charts so we can see the makeup of you OSAs.
Since your DME isn't forthcoming, I would wonder if you're on the right machine.
