Newbie. Apnea at night and day?

Post by nogutsnoglory » Fri Dec 05, 2014 6:58 pm

Hey all I'm new to the community. I haven't been diagnosed but strongly suspect I have sleep apnea. What's weird is I also gasp for air during the day. I don't really get that. Had an EKG and it was fine.

I'm seeing my pulmonologist and would like a home sleep study to see if it's sleep apnea. Any recommendations? If that proved a problem I would go for a comprehensive overnight study.

You're getting way ahead of yourself . No, you can't have daytime apnea, but you may well have all kinds of other respiratory problems, e.g. asthma, which I presume is why you're seeing a pulm. He's the one to ask about apnea and studies, etc., but only if it makes any sense to go there. You don't 'want' to have it (or anything else) if you have a choice after all. Let us know how things go after your appt. (good luck).

Well the daytime stuff I don't know what that is. But I wake up at night gasping for air many times, very scary. I also have high BP and very severe fatigue.

And some of that, if not all, could be anxiety related. Do you take meds (of any kind)?

Not exactly. If your home sleep study shows you have sleep apnea, then you go for a study (titration) where they find the appropriate CPAP pressure. Then you get a CPAP machine.

Dangerous stuff. Get it taken care of.

I used to gasp for air day and night too. Turned out I needed treatment for OSA as well as attention from a pulmonologist for a previously undiagnosed lung condition. I think I'd want to be under the care of a pulmonologist and discuss with them how far to take it. Does your insurance require a home study first? If not, I'd probably skip that step and go on in for a comprehensive sleep study. Yours is not the usual description of a routine OSA experience, for which the home tests are fine. Let us know what your doctor suggests.

Why can't you have a form of CA in the daytime? I don't gasp for air during the day but I swear I just sometimes 'forget' to breathe. I catch myself holding my breath for no reason.

That 'forgetting to breathe' in the daytime happens to everyone and is not about apnea or CA's.

I made the appt. I had a chest xray which was fine and hope he won't make me do a CT or MRI or some crazy test. I do think I have shallow breathing and sometimes just forget to breathe which sets panic and gasping for air. My oxygen levels are ok when I use my pulse oximitery so I think it's likely not immediate danger.

I took the home study version...but there was no titration to decide squat. Just got saddled with a unit and a crappy DME.

Yeah but it can rule out apnea I think. I most likely have it but an overnight for nothing would suck.
