Sleep Apnea Tied To Memory Impairment

Post by LSAT » Fri Dec 05, 2014 11:49 am

I have a subscription to a Cleveland Clinic Men's Health Letter. This is an article from the latest edition...........

"A study published Oct 29th, 2014 in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that people with sleep apnea may be more susceptible to declines in spatial memory, responsible for tasks such as remembering how to get home or where you parked your car. In the study, 18 people with severe sleep apnea treated with CPAP, played video games in which they had to navigate a computer generated maze. On one night, the participants used CPAP as normal, while the other night their CPAP was reduced during REM sleep, allowing sleep apnea to occur. The study participants showed significant improvements in the time they needed to complete the maze when they were treated with CPAP all night. But, when PEM sleep was disrupted they took 4% longer to complete the maze. The take home message: Sleep apnea may affect your memory."

I have thought for some time,(years), that my memory was getting worse, and have been told so, by my grandkids, as well as my wife. I do hope cpap therapy will help, some. My wife will always tell me where to go, lost, or otherwise, anyway....

Alternative interpretation of highfalutin-soundin' study: "Yer slower when yer sleepy."

My boss noticed my memory, organization, and problem solving had gotten better.
My husband noticed I had a much better disposition.

Seems like there should also read:
"My ex noticed my aim got better."

I completely agree that sleep apnea is a substantial contributor to memory loss!! I was beginning to believe I was suffering from early stages of Dimentia.. Until I began USING CPAP.. Now those issues have cleared up!! To me... THAT IS PROOF!
