Going Back to Sleep, A Good Idea?
Hi All,
Quick question. Seems even after my AHI numbers are settling in I still don't feel great. I often wake up after about 6 hours sleep, make a BR run then because I have time for another 1 to 2 hours of sleep I go back to sleep (with therapy). Could this be a cause of my foggyness even with therapy? Should I just wake up when I wake up the first time? Still trying to understand why I have seen AHI numbers as low as 0.8 and not feel awesome.
Thanks,
Eric

When's the last time you had a proper check-up with labs, etc? Not everything's about OSA (tho' it feels like it a lot ) and there could be thyroid, low T, Vit. D, any other kind of issues to consider.

I was just diagnosed less than a month ago, just curious if its generally acceptable practice to go back to sleep or not...

If you can go back sleep it seems like you should. I, too, often wake up after 5-6 hours. I WISH I could go back to sleep!

It's fine to sleep more if you haven't had enough... why wouldn't you?
Re: Going Back to Sleep, A Good Idea?
I doubt 6 hours is enough for the average person on a regular basis. At least, it's not enough for me. I'm all for getting enough plus a bit extra while one is recovering from long term compromised sleep. At this point in your treatment you're likely still recuperating. Do try to be sure (by your data) that your treatment is therapeutic and that subpar treatment doesn't delay your recovery.

Don't know about you, but I like all the extra sleep I can get. I'd go back to sleep!
Re: Going Back to Sleep, A Good Idea?
You could maybe try staying up and not going back to sleep to see if it helps or hurts how you feel during the daytime.
Me...If I only get 6 hours of sleep I will definitely want/need more at some point during the day so if I wake up early and if I can go back to sleep then I will sure take that opportunity to go back to sleep (with mask of course) because I don't feel my best on just 6 hours of sleep. Now sometimes I can't get back to sleep for whatever reason but if it can do it then I will.

Thanks guys! I seem to feel worse when I go back to sleep for like 1 to 1.5 hours. I am trying to stay up a little later now and it seems to be working. My sweet spot is like 7 hours.

Are you waking the second time naturally or using an alarm? You may be waking at a bad point in your sleep cycle. There are devices that can detect sleep phases and wake you at the best time if you have the flexibility.

AHI is just a number and is meaningless w/o knowing the avg pressure, leak rate, and mask being used.SleepySeoul wrote: Still trying to understand why I have seen AHI numbers as low as 0.8 and not feel awesome.

I think this is all about doing what is best for you. If you feel as though you need to go back to sleep and it fits your schedule, then go for it!! (but I'm glad to see you are putting your mask back on first!). I think this will take care of itself over time. Some of us felt total relief from fogginess beginning with the first night of treatment and some of us take several weeks. Also, as Julie mentioned, OSA may have just been one of the sources of your sleep issues. I wouldn't panic, though. It took me a few months to feel better and more energetic every morning. Congratulations on such a great start to your therapy!!SleepySeoul wrote:I was just diagnosed less than a month ago, just curious if its generally acceptable practice to go back to sleep or not...

It's an idea...not sure if good or bad, but I now typically wake once at night to use the bathroom. Then back to sleep unless the alarm will be going off in under 20 minutes.

How long have you been doing CPAP? If it's only a month, you may not be completely finished adjusting.SleepySeoul wrote:I was just diagnosed less than a month ago, just curious if its generally acceptable practice to go back to sleep or not...
It's fine to go back to sleep as long as you use your CPAP.

I read about waking up at the wrong time during your sleep cycle can make you feel very tired for several hours after.
