Recommend a full face mask for me.

Post by Noctuary » Fri Nov 14, 2014 1:45 pm

I'm desperate, ready to try anything. While the CPAP therapy has made a big difference, I still feel tired EVERY DAY. Today I feel like I haven't slept at all.

I now use a nasal mask, but I am sure air escapes through my mouth, because I can hear a hissing at night the sometimes wakes me up and I often have a dry mouth when I wake. I need a mask that is affordable; I just had a costly car repair.

So tired of feeling tired; I hate everyday.

The terms "affordable" and "CPAP equipment" are for the most part mutually exclusive. I mean you could I suppose spend a lot of time scouring Craigslist and eBay for stuff, but here's the rub: unless you are very lucky indeed you are going to have use trial and error to find a FFM that works well for you. I lost count of the ones I tried at around 12 or so before I settled on the Quattro Air. You can spend a lot of time here doing searches for various FFMs and you may get some ideas of what might work for you, but in the end you just have to try them. It's very individual. I have a very large head and face, and the Quattro Air works pretty well for me. (Be advised that this mask does run one full size smaller than others.) The older Mirage Quattro worked OK for me but just really reduced the bridge of my nose to hamburger meat. A lot of folks swear by various mask liners but they have never helped me and I find them a PITA to use. Again, you'll just have to try.

If you have insurance most DMEs will let you swap FFMs out for a month or more at no charge. Otherwise you might try ordering from our sponsors CPAP.com, and getting the return insurance.

Please hang tough and don't get discouraged or give up. It's a journey and a real process for sure, but the results are more than with the effort.

Good luck!

Noctuary, I agree with Old Dude, the Quattro Air is a pretty good mask and has interchangeable cushions with the AirFit F10. A similar but less expensive mask that works as well for me is the F&P Simplus. It also has the advantage, as the other two, of requiring only replacement cushions. Currently, I see the Simplus is going for $99 at CPAP.com

Taping one's mouth with Scotch Brand "Blue Painter's Tape" (easy release) is alot cheaper than another mask.

But, "Julie" and I are both long-time users of the ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face mask. Not terribly expensive, all the parts are replaceable, pretty durable. I've only had two parts break on my primary mask in 9 1/2 yrs and one was from accidentally dropping it on a hard floor. Very comfortable in my opinion. I've tried a couple of other full face masks over the years, but always came back to my UMFF.

I use the Zzz-Mask Full Face CPAP Mask Made by Probasics. I like that it does not have the forehead support, and more then anything else I like the price. Compared the price to Resmed masks this mask is half price, and the replacement cushions are about half also. The mask works well for me, but every one is different. I have high pressure settings of 23/19, and so far served me well.

I wish you well

Just make sure you're not getting congested by the nasal mask, causing you to mouth breathe.

If you can use them pillows are so much easier to use and seal...

Try the new Quattro Airfit F10, the regular Quattro Air, the Quattro FX or even the old Mirage Quattro. They also cope well with jaw drop and mouth opening. The new versions are smaller and lighter than the old, but the Quattros are generally all extremely comfy, quiet FFMs. Costly, however.

Another good choice for less money is the F&P Simplus, or the PR Amara Gel. Both excellent, comfy FFMs.

If you want a bulletproof tank of a mask that will last, and has an integrated chin cup to keep your mouth closed, try the Hans Rudolph V2 FFM.

Good luck!

I recently have tried this after being very pessimistic as to finding a face mask that is comfortable and doesn't wake me with leaking. I came from the Resmed Airfit F-10 and for me this mask is superior. I love it.

Thank you all for the replies. I went to the doctor today and told him of my ssssssssss problem. He sent a request to my supplier for a face mask. I don't know if my insurance will pay for it or not, but I want to try. I forgot though to ask him about Provigil.

I agree with hyperlexis. Any of these are a comfortable choice, though I have not yet tried the Airfit 10. Full face masks without forehead bracing are more comfortable for me, through the old quattro is a good standby.

Like many others on CPAPtalk, I like the new ResMed AirFit F10s. IMO, they are a big jump forward in mask technology. Their biggest flaw is that they are too damned expensive, nearly twice what some other masks cost. If you've got insurance tho, not a big deal. I do use Padacheek liners to make them more comfortable since my face tends to sweat under bare silicone.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
