Is the captcha utility new? I've never seen it used here

Post by Nick Danger » Fri Nov 14, 2014 8:55 am

This morning for the first time, I've had to enter a captcha every time I post to the forum. Is it just me?

Cool - didn't have to enter it this time.

Yeah, I was. The first 3 posts/edits I made this morning made me go through the captcha, but then it went away.

Maybe the board was getting spammed? Or "they" are testing something.
I usually have to enter a captcha a few time because I seem to misread one of the characters.
Captcha usually slow people down more than bots anyway.

Annoying, but useful. Works like a combination lock where the code was scrawled down
by someone using their non-dominant hand--or a foot. Keeps out robots, foreigners, and dyslexics.

If you select Quote or Post Reply while you are not logged in, the captcha screen pops up. But, at that point, the login tab works.

Otherwise, I haven't experienced the captcha popping up unexpectedly.
Are you using the keep me logged in function? Perhaps that is where the problem coming from.

Not related to being logged in or not.
I have see the captcha thing when I was for sure logged in. It's random and probably just a forum gremlin.
Doesn't happen often but I have seen it on more than one occasion.

If it's what I saw, there's a company name or domain name on the CAPTCHA screen. I forget the name, but if you do a little googling, it's a service that does various kinds of "smart" things to help cut down on bots. Various things about your IP address or whatever raise the "suspicions" of this service and make it give you a CAPTCHA.

The next time you see a CAPTCHA, look for the URL or the name of the service and post it. I think it had "clear" in the name, but memory is fuzzy right now.

This will pass with time and number of posts or PMs you make. I don't remember just how long or how many though....but it will pass.

I always log in. The posts I made that used the Captcha have my profile attached to them. Hasn't happened since the other morning - I'm guessing that AT&T may have been messing with IP addresses than morning.
