cowgirlcullen, since I am 59, you're still young. All jokes aside, if you kept waking up during the sleep study in which you have my utmost sympathy on, your AHI actually could be under-reported because there are less opportunities for your airway to relax and go into apneas.

Regarding the issue of weight, I am thin by the way and am guessing I have had apnea most of my life. So while losing weight is a good thing, it may not necessarily protect you against having it.

Also, one can have DSPS and apnea at the same time. Just because you thought DSPS was your main issue, doesn't mean that apnea can't exist also.

No matter what you chose to do, personally, I would get at least a yearly sleep study to make sure things aren't worsening. A home study would work if finances are an issue.

Best of luck again.

cowgirlcullen wrote:49er, thank you for your post. Finally, someone who can speak reasonably. First, I'm not that young, I'll be 39 in a couple weeks. Second, I just went and looked at my paperwork and it says that my AHI is 11. However, I had to sleep on my back in the sleep study because the wires and junk wouldn't let me sleep on my side, as I usually do, and sleeping on my back causes me to snore and wake myself up. Also during the study, my lights out was at midnight and my lights on was at 0900 and during this time they started waking up other patients as early as 0600 and were not quiet about it, waking me up many times in the process. So, this AHI is high due to these circumstances. But, 11 is still well below what my doctor (and other doctors) feels is improved at all with CPAP.

I appreciate you explaining how apnea can worsen. I'm not sure why people's apnea worsens, perhaps with weight gain and age. But I do know that mine is completely weight related and I certainly don't intent to get any fatter haha. I know no one intends that though and that it somehow just creeps up on us a few pounds a year, slowly but surely. However, I started taking some serious action this year to start combating my weight and am really not worried at all that I will fail and have to buy another CPAP.

I will check into the dental devices per your suggestion (thank you) as I am open to trying new things (and sticking with them if they work). However, I still don't feel like I really have an apnea problem that needs solving. My real problem and reason why I did the sleep study is because I excessive daytime sleepiness due to having DSPS (delayed sleep phase syndrome) and unfortunately have built up a tolerance to caffeine. But that's a whole other ball of wax.

Lastly, regarding the sale of the machine and supplies, I currently have 2 offers for $500 and $515 and will probably move forward with one of them in a couple days if no one else contacts me.

Thank you so much for your kind words and advice. I really appreciate being able to chat in a calm and respectful manner.

My husband was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and refused to wear a CPAP. It's totally understandable - denial - 15 years later he had a mild stroke. The neurologist told him that they don't know if the stroke was caused by sleep apnea or if the sleep apnea was caused by the stroke but he uses a CPAP now. Neurologist worked at a large hospital back east before moving to California where he studied this issue.

If you only have a problem while on your back, which most of us do, you should check into positional ... I don't know what they call it ....therapy (?). Doing things like sewing tennis balls into a t shirt positioned on the back so that when you roll onto your back it wakes you up.

Loosing weight can help. Last week Dr. Oz had a medical doctor on his show that lost over 100 lbs and stated that he no longer has sleep apnea. So it is possible to do.

Drinking alcohol makes sleep apnea worse so avoid it.

I bought a very expensive mouth guard only to find out during sleep study that it made my sleep apnea worse.

Good luck to you.

Sorry, but your doctor is full of beans.
My untreated AHI was only 13, but cpap has made me a new person, er, frog.
Before, I was always tired, weepy, angry. After, I finally felt like I actually slept at night.
You sound like I used to feel. It's sad you choose to stay miserable.

So...are you saying that the same doctor who prescribed you the machine is telling you now that there is no benefit from the machine? If that is the case, why were you prescribed this machine?

I am interested in this machine. Did you have another sleep study done? How are you doing? Do you still need to sell your machine?

Cowgirl. I think you should do what you want. I will say though that I was told by my dr. that anyone with mild sleep apnea will not respond to cpap therapy as quickly as someone with moderate to severe.

Also I tried the mouthpiece route for almost a year and still felt like doo doo. I've been on a cpap now in december for a year and things still are not great, in fact sometimes they are down right frustrating, but they are better. I have a few more good days than I had without the machine.

Just my .02 cents
