nasal septum deviation and apnea

Post by chris677 » Thu Oct 16, 2014 4:52 am

Hello

After one year and half on cpap, a doctor (for ear and nose) with endoscopy has diagnostic a nasal septum deviation on the right(i don't see it on my nose).
one year and half before, when i was diagnosticed sleep apnea i went to a doctor (for ear and nose) but it has not see nasal septum deviation but it hasn't done endoscopy.

Can this nasal septum deviation cause apnea : if i done a chirgucial process, can it solve my apnea ?

ps i have a nasal mask and don't seem to have bad respiration.

Thanks

Hi chris677,

See this article by an ENT on how having a septoplasty does not cure apnea.

Now if the deviates septum is causing issues that are contributing to pap therapy intolerance, having it repaired can make a big difference usually. Only you can decide that and it really doesn't matter what either doctor says.

Why do I get the feeling the doctor's trying to finance his own daughter's nose job? Me, cynical? Really?

Unfortunately, sleep doctors have told me my nasal passages are fine when I struggle to breath through my nose. So it could be this ENT was being honest although I definitely understand your skepticism. As always, you have to proceed very carefully and ask alot of questions.

ok thanks i will check with another doc for nose and ear and ask my sleep doc what he think.
But if it doesn't help on apnea as mention on your web site, i wouldn't do anything.

I don't understand your last message 49er. can you write it differently with other word. You have perhaps nasal septum deviation too and your doc said to you it's fine ? i m wrong ?

Hi chris677,

Exactly! I have a double septum deviation and my sleep doc also said it was fine when I am having problems. In all fairness, I had expressed reservations about having surgery for various reasons and I think she was trying to reassure me. But my point is which applies to both of us is we need to find a trustworthy ENT who will do a thorough evaluation of our problems and then provide their opinions which we can accept or not accept. I just feel most sleep doctors are not very knowledgeable about nasal issues which is kind of surprising because they can definitely interfere with sleep although obviously, your mileage will vary.
