Nuance Mask Noisier than Swift FX?

Post by Crain nut » Wed Oct 15, 2014 5:37 pm

Tried the Resmed Nuance Pro last night for the first time. It seems to make more noise on inhalation and exhalation than the Swift FX I have been using. So much so that I switched masks after waking up to the hurricane in my head.

Is this something I am imagining or has anyone else noticed this?

The Nuance is a Respironics mask and not Resmed but I have used both and didn't particularly notice more noise with one over the other but "noise" is highly subjective sometimes.
Is it the venting or is it inhale/exhale Darth Vader noise you are hearing?

If it's for sure coming from the vent holes and you want a pretty much silent venting nasal pillow mask then I would suggest you check out the ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask. It's pretty much silent in terms of vent noise plus the way it diffuses the vented air it can barely be felt by my hand at 1 inch from the holes.

Now if you are hearing the inhale/exhale Darth Vader noise...I don't know what to tell.

Thanks for the reply Pugsy. Yep, it's the Darth Vader sound. I just don't understand why it seems one mask compared to the other is louder. The internal bore of the pillows seem to be similar.

I'm going to try it again tonight. Maybe I can stuff some sound deadening padding under the huge elastic band my DME calls the "Deluxe Chinstrap".

I have the Darth Vadar noise sometimes and not other times and not change anything. Same mask, same pressure, same routine. I think part of it may be "conductive" noise. If I plug my ears with my fingers the Darth Vadar noise doesn't change at all and that means "it's in my head"

I wish I knew how to for sure get rid of the "conductive" Darth Vadar sounds...I could make a fortune with a buck for each person who complains about it.

All I know to offer is try the usual stuff to limit conductive noise and see if it helps...hose cozy maybe...hose routing system to keep it up off the mattress, etc. White noise in the back ground to maybe distract the mind from zeroing in on the breathing sounds.

Thanks for the tips. The Nuance headgear has a hose loop for routing the short elephant snout overhead so maybe I could use that to route the 22mm hose over the headboard. Has a cozy too. White noise, hummm. Will need to work on that.

I'm using the Nuance Pro. I don't notice any sound at all from the air holes, but it's loud as can be if there's any leakage at all around the edges.
The fit has to be just perfect. I tuck the hose behind the pillow so that it pulls up, not down.
During the dry winter months, I add a touch of nasal gell to the nostrals to ensure a tight fit.
