Headgear Slding up the Back of My Head.

Post by Titrator » Fri May 06, 2005 4:37 pm

Everytime I try to use a nasal mask, the headgear slides up the back of my head and the mask looses its seal.

Is anyone have a fit for this? The Aura headgear doesn't slide anywhere. it has the nubs on it.

I would love to hear a few suggestions.

Yeah the Aura headgear is pretty non-skid with all those nubs on the inside of it. For me though it makes a pretty scary looking imprint into the top of my bald head. When I talked to Aeiomed I told them it would be nice to have a felt lining on it or something, at least for us hair challenged folks.

Not sure what to say about the head gear sliding off. With the swift I am able to slide the back strap far enough down the back of my head so it catches in the curve where my neck and head join creating a pretty secure hold. Still I notice I am almost sub-consciously sliding my hand down the back of my head periodically throughout the night to make sure and pull it back down. It's amazing how these adjustments in behavior just seem to happen sometimes...

I still have a full head o'hair and it slides around all the time. plus the chin strap slides off too. I have tried making it tighter, but I guess I'm too much like Charlie Brown, the round-headed kid. I haven't found an answer yet. Post-its? Duct tape? Staples? I'll have to watch this to see what ideas people have.

Try electrical tape around them with it's m ild stickiness.

Titrater, I like your other avatar better, it was classic, not the smoking one!

Ted,

In order to get the Swift mask to stay in place, I ordered a Respironics soft chin strap (white - P/N 302175). I put it on, stretched it out, and fastened it temporarily with plastic vegetable bag ties to mark it on both sides. My husband then punched about a 3/32 inch hole through the straps of the chin strap and the Swift interface (on the strap that goes around the back of the head about 1 ½ inches from the centerline of the juncture of the two head straps) on both sides with a punch tool. He put plastic vegetable bag ties (ones similar to what you get in the grocery store) through the holes to secure it). This also keeps the strap at the back of the Swift mask from riding up. Be sure to place the plastic ties in such a way so they do not poke you in the eyes.

I have not tried this application with other masks as my supply of masks is limited.

Let me know if this helps you.

Titrator,

I forgot to say that I removed the little velcro piece that Rock & Roll likes because it restricted me to lying on one side.

It is much easier to put the improved hookup on while sitting on the edge of the bed because everything falls into the proper place.

Yoga,

Thank you for the detailed view of your setup. I see there is no easy way to address this issue. I think I have a Charle Brown head too...

R&R the new avatar is Akira Kuwasawa. I am not crazy about the smoking part, but I do appreciate his vast contribution to the film industry.

Ahhhhhh This is the story of my life (at least Cpap life). I seem to have trouble with many of the newer interfaces that have the single strap (back of the head) headgear. I've gone back to the only mask that fits me well.........."The Ultra Mirage Nasal Mask" It has the "web like" strapping on the back of the head. Sure would be nice if some the other interfaces had the option of various headgear configurations. That's probably asking too much.............. Hummmmm at the price they're charging....maybe it's not asking too much

As far as I've been able to tell with at least the Swift you can do one of two things
a. keep the back straps loose, enough to put 3 fingers or more underneath, the top strap will more or less keep the pillows in place.
b. substitute the headgear for a cap instead.

worked for me.

If your hair is long enough, try putting your hair into a ponytail or two tiny pigtails. I use the Scunci "No Damage" elastics, which are just very thin bands. I don't notice the pony at all because of that, and my hair is fairly thick. That being said, it doesn't take much hair to make a ponytail. I've been able to do it even when my hair was considered short. If you're "hair challenged", it could be a problem, though

The ponytail helps keep the back strap from riding up and can be located in different spots according to the mask you wear. It also makes it easier to get the mask on quickly, because you're not spending time pulling hair out from under the various straps to avoid that itchy "mashed hair against skin" feeling.
