Slowly Taming Centrals – More to Do

Post by startanew » Thu Sep 04, 2014 9:36 pm

An update..from last June. I’m one of the folks who develop Complex Sleep Apnea in response to starting APAP treatment last December.

After getting an appointment with a sleep doc and the RT (and showing them sleepyhead data). We made the following changes to settings and equipment
• Changed settings from 5 – 20 cm to 6-9 cm
• Turned A-Flex Off
• Switched from OPUS 360 to Airfit P10
• Went from large to medium pillows

As you can see from the summary data there has been a significant decrease in the number of nights with big spikes of centrals. I suspect the first two changes had the most effect as they we made first.

There were a couple of exceptions to my better numbers:

* The cluster of high AHI readings in early August where while traveling in Colorado (going from sea-level to 7000 feet, not having a wedge pillow to elevate, and general travel stress. As soon as I got back to see level and my pillow set up things settled down

* The high reading in late August probably had something to do with taking out the air filter to clean and forgetting to replace it .. or gremlins

While doing better – things are not great – I’m getting more OSA’s. And still getting mild headaches and residual sleepiness the afternoon / evening (but much better than a year ago!!!). After following up with my sleep doc we are bumping the settings from 6-9 to 7-10 to see if that brings the number OSAs down – without bringing up the centrals. I just made the first change 6.5 – 9.5. My first foray into the provider menu…

Here are couple of typical nights

I’m hoping I can find settings that will work without going to an ASV, but may need go there eventually. The good news is that I’ve found a sleep doc who is flexible and curious and willing to consider moving to an ASV if my numbers are "borderline" but not sleeping well. He asked the ‘right questions’ -- how are you sleeping – how are you feeling?

Stay tuned as I continue on the journey
