I currently have no sleep doc, and my annual "Supplies 'script" will expire soon. I'm going to see if my GP will write one the next time I see him, but if that fails I'm screwed.

Any ideas other than breaking in another doc and convincing him/her that I can handle my own therapy?
Comment,

LinC, I regret to aimlessly getting involved with other posters inside your own conversation territory. I could ask Orly Avitzur, MD, if she is ready to cover your CPAP supply. She is a certified Neurologist and a clinical instructor at Yale University School of Medicine. She is also a medical consultant to the New York Rangers.

Many of her patients elected to see her even though she is not in their network anymore. In most cases she gives them a substantial discount from her regular fees.

See her blog here:

She also wrote this about Sleep Apnea:

p.s. I would not dare recommending Jeff of Brooklyn Heights to her even if he is close geographically to her practice. This is b/c he is sort of a nudnik.

Reply,

No, it was the Mossad and not the NSA.

I wished that I lived closer to Orly Avitzur to gain from her medical knowledge. But right now I am looking for a Vascular specialist to treat my PAD (Diabetic feet) and not an OSA shmosa Neurologist.

The general rule has always been that any legitimate medical doctor could write scripts: Psychiatrists, PCP, dentists, neurologists and so on. Shockingly, I've recently heard a few reports on this forum that some insurance companies are saying that CPAP prescriptions will only be accepted from sleep doctors. No doubt, lawsuits will follow. If all this is true, then there are BIG changes in the wind. Sounds like 'medical insurance' lock-down to me. Big Medi-Corps rule... all others drool.

Avi123: age + diabetes + podiatry problems = (well, it's all just too painful to say out loud, but most educated people know what the potential endgame is.) My wife knew a lady co-worker who shrugged off her problems to the bitter end... and it didn't end well. Take care of what you have to take care of and good luck.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Sir,

Who can write a CPAP prescription?

The prescription can be written by any of the following care providers:
Medical Doctor
Doctor of Osteopathy
Psychiatrist
Physicians Assistant
Nurse Practitioners
Dentist
Naturopathic Physician

We (CPAP Supply USA) cannot accept a prescription written by any of the following practitioners unless the practitioner is also an MD or DO:
Chiropractor
Podiatrist
Optometrist
Psychologist

My dentist is an OSA "victim", too. I told him my therapy is under control, I've been managing my own therapy for over 5 yrs, and I have an APAP. He has no problem writing one annually when I get my dental checkup.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

Its nice to read when some one can not only manage their therapy, and also manage the system.

Congratulations!

I wish you well

This is an interesting discussion. I've been using CPAP since May of 2012. Not long by some standards but log enough for me to settle in for the long haul. For the first six months I checked my stats daily. When everything seemed to smooth out and the only blips on my graphs were because my nasal pillows needed replacing, I started spot checking my display results. I also engaged my PCP as my "sleep coach / doctor". He and I chat about how CPAP is going with me on my yearly exams. He looks at my graphs (from sleepyhead) that I put on my iPad and for the last two times we agreed that nothing needed changing. If I need a new script, he writes one. All very civilized and exactly how it should be. At some point in time, I may need to go to the sleep center again and I suspect my PCP will write that script as well, till then I keep coming in here to read and keep up with new products and old friends and keep on keeping on.
