How Slow of Pulse is Too Slow?

Post by OldLincoln » Sun Aug 10, 2014 4:39 pm

Last night was my first night of using my new CMS50F oximeter. Oxi remained above the alarm set at 85 however my pulse continually set off alarms until I set it down to 25. My normal waking rate is 60. So if the oxi is okay will the slow flow hurt me?

Talk to your doctor about the pulse rate. He knows your meds and history. Your doc would be the best person to tell you if the low heart rate is a problem or not.

I would say that if you are less than half of what your normal is - YES it is time to get help. Not so sure I would wait for the doc.

The alarm is set for a reason right?

never ever listen to 'guest'.

since you didn't say what your heart rate was dropping to, it's another example of the cowards ASS-U-MEing information never stated.

do what pugsy says, and consult your doctor.

As a point of reference my pulse rate frequently is in the 35 - 40 bpm range during sleep. My cardiologist has a pulse of 42 while sitting and talking to me.

Best is to discuss this with your doctor but as long as your O2 is OK I am not sure there is much of a problem.

The technical term for slow heart rate is bradycardia.
Here is a link.

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Condition ... rticle.jsp

What is a problem for one person may not be for another.
If you are concerned, check with your doctor. He may order an overnite Holter monitor study or he may say not to worry.

Edited to correct the spelling error although brachycardia is an accepted alternate spelling.

Uhh, that would be 'bradycardia".

It is not uncommon for high-functioning aerobic athletes (like bicyclists) to have low heart rates.
For a non-athlete, this would be a cause for concern.

Last year my GP freaked out when he saw the resting heart rate from my EKG during my annual physical (45). I told him this wasn't an issue because I am a trained endurance runner and this had been a typical value for several years, but he insisted that I see a cardiologist ASAP. The cardiologist said that there are two primary causes of bradycardia. In my case it is something called Athlete's Heart, which occurs to those involved with lots of aerobic exercise, like cycling and hard running over extended periods of time. However, it can also be a sign of heart disease. So, if you regularly see a resting heart rate below 60 and haven't discussed it with your doctor, you need to do that soon, since even those with mild Athlete's Heart could also have heart disease.
