Earplugs & CPAP
Earplugs & CPAP
I've been wearing earplugs for year before I was diagnosed with apnea (since I was such a light sleeper) and kept using the earplugs while I adjusted to CPAP.
It's been a few months since I've been using CPAP (life saver!)...and able to sleep deeply now...I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting used to not wearing earplugs after years of use? Any recommendations/personal experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated!

I still use earplugs but have noticed that I get deeper sleep
with my pap machine which would make it harder for me to wake up from noise

Re: Earplugs & CPAP
One thing you could consider if you are tired of wearing the earplugs, but have trouble sleeping due to noises is to use a white noise machine. I have a problem using earplugs because I have tinnitus - when there is no sound impinging on my ears, my ears make up their own sound. The ringing gets louder the quieter my surroundings. Unfortunately, my partner snores and wakes me. I use a white noise machine set just loud enough to offset the snores. This works very well and has the pleasant side effect of reducing the ringing in my ears.

I still use earplugs during the last half of the night because I may want to sleep late into the morning (after 7am). I live near three schools and that is when the traffic begins: It's all starts and stops with people getting frustrated with the congestion (not much horn beeping tho). I use the silicone type and almost forget that they are in my ears. No problems with them so far, but I do wash my ears every day or at least clean them with alcohol ... not the inner ear, of course. Here's the brand that I use:

The white noise suggestion above is a good one... I've found that it can take awhile getting used to the white noise in your sleep environment... weeks, maybe a month.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Re: Earplugs & CPAP
I started wearing earplugs in 1988 when I was working a job on the graveyard shift. After I finished that job, I was excited to be able to not have to wear earplugs, but I never slept well. So I started wearing them again.
Once in 1996, I flew to Turkey and my bag was delayed. While in Turkey, I could not find any earplugs while waiting for my bag. I was up for 36 hours straight because I didn't have them. Now I keep multiple pairs in multiple bags, including my CPAP bag.
I'd highly recommend trying alternatives to earplugs if you can.

CPAP for the rest of your life.

I also use a white noise machine, as I had for decades before CPAP. Great combo.

Ear plugs, white noise machine, small fan ... then I followed Gramps lead and got a CPAP ... soon found out it wasn't the noise, it was choking to death ... got rid of ... ear plugs, white noise machine, fan. Like sleeping without them.mint0101 wrote:I've been wearing earplugs for year before I was diagnosed with apnea (since I was such a light sleeper) and kept using the earplugs while I adjusted to CPAP.

so, you're advocating getting addicted to something *less* convenient to carry around with you than earplugs?davelikesbeer wrote:I'd highly recommend trying alternatives to earplugs if you can.

I hear you, Granny. The problem is my partner is in denial about having sleep apnea - I use the white noise machine to cover her snores.

I stuck a mask on my bed partner to quiet the bed shanking snoring. works a treat.Nick Danger wrote:I hear you, Granny. The problem is my partner is in denial about having sleep apnea - I use the white noise machine to cover her snores.
