Is there is a machine replacement schedule?

Post by Brian » Wed Jul 16, 2014 1:58 pm

Anyone know if there is a xPAP machine replacement schedule?
I've been on xPAP for about 14 years and am on my second machine that was bought by insurance.

I've bought a couple of others out of pocket as travel machines, (PB GoodNight 420 and now an Aiomed Everest 3)

As mu Everest 3 is no longer made and is getting old, I'm hoping for a replacement at some point.
I'm just a Regular Joe trying to make it in a big, bad, unfair world armed with nothing more than a fistful of unsubstantiated facts, a somewhat weak grasp of the English language, misplaced vengeance issues and some tired conspiracy theories.

My understanding is that most Insurance companies will replace a machine every 5 years. I'm just starting this process myself. My machine is about 6 years old, and has over 16,000 hours on it. While it still works well, I realize it is getting old and want to replace it before it dies. Perhaps I'll keep my current one as backup / travel unit. It has already been used in at least four countries.

My first machine (REMStar BiPap) died after 2yrs just after the warranty expired. It was replaced with an M-Series BiPap which I have now had 6 years. It is still working well, but I have a new Primary which said I should have no problems getting a new machine and has setup a referral to the sleep clinic for a basic visit to go over what I have (not a new study, yet).

I have over 16000 hours on my current machine and use it anytime I sleep/nap. Works well. While it has a smart card, I have not bother to look at the data for a long time. Had to just order another card reader to get reports from it since I can't figure out where I put it after my last computer was replaced. Should have that in a day or two and will go over the reports for about a week before seeing the sleep dr. I don't expect any issues as I have changed insurance 3 times in that time period.

My primary dr was great, knew a lot about the machines how they worked, and said I would not need to deal with a DME to get the new machine. had to deal with Apria the first 2 times.

My insurance, United Healthcare, uses 3 years in the handbook for replacement of equipment. I'm sure its case-by-case and type of equipment, though.

I'm approaching 36,000 hrs on my 13.5 year old machine.
