Hi I have used Cpap for 4 years. I believe these are side effects of the treatment, much like the side effects that comes with pills. lol. Since I started, I have developed tinnitus, swoshing in the ears, Vertigo, chronic sinusitus, sore throats, ear aches, high blood pressure and wieght gain. All of these have been occuring after cpap therapy started. I complained, the reply was I wasnt keeping my machine clean, wrong mask, wearing the right mask wrong, bottom line, any problems I have had with my therapy is blamed on me. Here is what I discovered, My sinuses cannot take the PSI of the cpap blowing 8 hours into my nasal, sinuses, inner ears. I have had the expense of mask changes, pressure changes and although my card readout looks stellar, I am miserable. Good sleep came at first but quickly evolved into nightly frustation of mask leak noises/adjustments and congestion/sneezing and sleepiness during the day. I can no longer afford the expense of maintaining Cpap by making the constant changes to make it work. I made the decision to go off Cpap and slept wonderfully, the constant congestion in my head is finally starting to move, but after all these year, I dont think it knows where to go. i am going to take a break from Cpap to see if these things clear up. As for now all I have is suspicion. I know the risk involve with OSA but I cant go on this way either...

queenie, you have not registered but post lots of questionable theories. If you feel OK with out using a CPAP then it's good and all the best wishes to you. I had almost all of those ailments that you mentioned but I took care of all of them by doing rehab at a local Neurology Clinic, and I have fantastic treatment from my CPAP in APAP mode. About your condition of air flow into your nose causing runny nose it might be a Vasomotor Rhinitis. Google this term.

Your local experts to treat those conditions are found here:

Thanks for all the responses. My primary care physician referred me to an ENT, who after some tests found that I had superior canal dehiscence-mild on the left, severe on the right. The superior canal is part of your vestibular (balance) system and dehiscence means the bone is thinned or even broken and missing, causing a superfluous opening in the canal which affects the pressure of the fluids in the inner ear and hence the vertigo and balance issues. I had two surgeries in 2013, one on each side, to repair the dehiscences. After appropriate recovery and several months of physical therapy I felt like I was almost back to normal and had resumed use of my AutoPAP with the permission of the surgeon. Unfortunately about 7 months after the second surgery I had a sudden decline and an MRI found a new dehiscence. The ENT recommended I stop using the AutoPAP. I'm again scheduled for surgical repair (next week). After recovery I am referred to another ENT who specializes in treating people who can't treat their apnea with a PAP machine.

SCD is a serious issue than can include cognitive deficit and memory loss. If you have vertigo, dizziness, or balance issues while using a PAP please see an ENT who specializes in treatment. It even requires special CT and MRI machines that can see the fine bones in the inner ear to detect and diagnose. Because I did experience remarkable improvement after the surgeries I am certain the diagnosis was correct, and comparing this year's MRI to last year's of the same area shows a new injury, so although there may be some other cause, I suspect using the AutoPAP is what is causing the injuries.

Be really careful about the ENT who specializes in alternatives to CPAP. Some of those guys are chop-happy quacks who want to cut on you with surgery with low success rates and lots of side effects. Get a lot of details and do your research on anything he wants to do to you.

Sometimes, alternatives to CPAP are necessary.

You might do better with some form of bilevel/BiPAP/VPAP.

Good luck with your treatment, though.
