Post by joekel » Tue Jul 01, 2014 7:57 am

Hi everyone its been a while since I have posted. I switched to nasal pillows a month ago and its been a mess constant dry and painful throat- dry mouth that feels like there is a film on my teeth. I switched on the recommendation of my medical equipment provider. I am a total mouth breather. Thanks for any help or advice

If you continue to mouth breathe with your nasal pillows, have you tried a chin strap? If you cannot get the mouth breathing under control, then perhaps nasal pillows are not for you.

I had the same experience with the dry throat and mouth. A chinstrap worked wonders for me! I hope it works for you. The advice I received on using the chinstrap is to make it tight enough that it is uncomfortable to chew, but not uncomfortable when your mouth is closed.

You might want to try a bite-guard (a silicone insert that you put in your mouth); it could have the effect of giving you a reference for your jaw, i.e., when one has something in their mouth, they tend to instinctively keep it closed. It would also save your teeth from wearing out, especially with a tight chin-strap. I use some $1 dental trays from Amazon and only wear one on the bottom jaw - it's more comfortable for me that way.
I got used to keeping the mouth shut in a short time; after that I was so "addicted" to it that when I had episodes of full nasal obstruction, I would almost suffocate, rather than open my mouth to take a breath...
