Scuba mask sealant for leaks - success

Post by maljushri » Sat Jun 07, 2014 8:54 am

For anyone struggling with leaks, I have a success story. My 90% total leaks number in Sleepyhead was averaging around 34 L/min and I was getting frustrated, often skipping nights because I preferred no mask to messing with it in the middle of the night.

I tried the CPAP gel seal liner, http://www.cpapseal.com/, but it didn't make a difference in my numbers and in addition to feeling strange, getting in my eyes, it would often wind up leaking and flapping around.

A few days ago, based on some Googling (and these forums) I ordered a small tube of mask sealer and mustache wax from Amazon (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O752FQ/). Last night, my 90% total leaks number dropped to 22! The small tube is not going to be enough, although only a thin coat is needed, so I'll probably pick up a tub of it.

Thank you! I was JUST this morning looking at something similar to this on Amazon (based on remembering some old discussions on here). I've been putting off trying something for way too long. I am such a light sleeper that almost any leak wakes me up. I would love to know if this continued to work for you (or anyone else who has tried something similar), if you ended up with any type of rash from using it every night, etc.

Thanks!

Another product is 'Dermeze' which is just thick liquid and soft white paraffin. (Hypoallergenic and fragrance free).

That is the Australian brand name, but you could probably pick some up under another name in a Pharmacy/Drug store in the skin care section cheaply.

Just be aware that petroleum-based products may damage the silicon part of your mask. I use a scuba mask sealer from an online dive store. Because I use nasal pillows, I don't use much. It does help, though.

For what it's worth........discussions regarding "SCUBA mask sealant" on the forum go back to 2006.

Petroleum-based products do not damage silicone. They damage latex, so you shouldn't worry in that respect. Silicone liquid products damage silicone solid products like cpap cushions. Most brand cushions are not pure silicone anyway but a blend of silicones and cheaper synthetic plastics, so its a crap shoot anyway. But absolutely no current cushions contain latex.
