Taping on lips

Post by Luthie2006 » Mon Jun 16, 2014 6:35 pm

Good evening: I am sure this subject has been brought up before. I am a newbie and sleeping not too bad with the WISP laying on my side but constantly coughing. My GI doc wants me to raise the bed up 6 inches with blocks which I had my friend do and sleep on my back. Well sleeping on my back with the chin strap I had been using and now a soft cervical collar that I read on here, my mouth still opens slightly but just enough where the air is coming out. I know taping is not recommended. However, I thought if I cut off one inch of medical tape and taped my lips on the side and the other on the right side of my lips (vertically) it would be better and a "reminder" to keep my lips closed. Does anyone else tape? Thank you

I prefer the chinstrap over taping my lips because:

If my nasal mask is sealing well and I also tape my mouth real well and if also my esophageal- to- stomach valve does not act 100%, I then ingest air which has no way to escape out from my GI tract. This ingested air causes painful distention of my abdomen. By using my chinstrap and letting my mouth open a bit then during the CPAP inhalation pressure it allows this extra air to get out from my GI tract into the atmosphere. Besides, even if you tape your lips tightly then air from your nose could enter your mouth from the back side of the throat (the pharynx) and circulate in the mouth and next go back out thru your nose during expiration. This will repeat during the next inhalation cycle. There is nothing to prevent CPAP air from flowing that way and also dry your mouth at the same time.

I thing that I have already showed you my recent full year Stats indicating that I get good results without taping mi lips and letting my mouth be a bit open. Frankly, I often remove the chinstrap during later half of the night and continue without it. No problem.

I use the 1 inch 3M Micropour tape and it really helps. It causes me no issues.

Salton, how do you tape your mouth I thought I would be conservative and tape just the sides vertical with 1/2 inch strip and leave the center of my lips open just in case.....
How you do tape?
