First Night was a fail

Post by patrickfamily » Wed Jun 04, 2014 7:19 am

Thank you everyone for responding to my posts. I am not sure why my doctor prescribed the 5min 20max pressure settings. They said in 3 months they would review and make adjustments. I couldn't access my advanced settings until I looked up the directions on how to do so. They told me not to adjust but I did anyway... I moved the 5 up to 7 and the 20 down to 15...

But I still couldn't sleep...UGH, I finally ripped it off at midnight and said I will try another night, here is my problem I feel like I am almost asleep and it startles me and I wake up. The sensation is weird, I feel like it forces air into me...I am not going to give up but I think I will wait until the weekend to start round two.

Any suggestions on the pressure setting let me know, I know I have to do the full mask because of constant nasal congestion. Thanks again to all of you for helping a new guy out..

Take Care and Happy Sleeping,
Doug

Hi, first try turning down (or even off) the humidifier to see if it helps with congestion as it often does. Second, do get your mask sorted out asap (easier said than done of course!). Do you have trouble exhaling? If so you can adjust the EPR (or exhalation relief, C-flexl, etc.) setting on your machine to help with that... and others will come in here with more.

Use it while awake and watching TV or reading a book without the added stress of "having to go to sleep".

Starting at 7 cm and letting the machine increase from there should be more comfortable. It shouldn't be increasing the pressure unless it senses the need to do so.
Now sometimes people are super sensitive to the least little change in pressure and if that is what is happening in your situation perhaps fixed cpap mode would be a better option.
How apaps work...they start out at so and so pressure and only increase within the selected range if they sense a need to prevent some sort of obstructive apnea event due to airway tissue collapse. So that maximum range doesn't really come into the picture unless the machine thinks it has to go there.

Get SleepyHead and let's see what the pressure was doing when it seemed to startle you.

Also, that Sensawake thing...I have heard some people complain about it...that the changes are startling and disruptive. I have never used a F & P machine so I don't know what the Sensawake feels like. I know it is supposed to be helpful but if someone is sensitive to pressure changes it might not be so helpful.
I don't know if it can be turned off but if it can...that is something you might look into as an option to try.
