If it's bad enough, it will show up as a leak. The machine can't tell whether it's a mouth leak, or some other kind of leak.

A small leak may not show up, even if it's enough to give you dry mouth.

is a chinstrap the best way to go about stopping potential mouth breathing?

Yes, on the chin strap. However, many people have trained themselves to keep their tongue at the roof of their mouth - near the front teeth. Takes practice.

It doesn't work for everyone, but a chin strap is the best first step. I make my own from a 3 inch Ace brand non-adhesive bandage wrapped around my head 3 times, and pinned with safety pins. There are also a lot of commercial chin straps, but I prefer this one. It's cheap, and wicks away moisture pretty well. I have to replace it every couple of months.

A full face mask is the best answer - chin straps may keep your jaws closed, but can't keep lips closed and can be uncomfortable.

A FFM should be the last resort. It's harder to keep from leaking. It's harder to stop leaks because it has to seal on a larger area of your face. It can also increase your pressure needs because it pushes on your jaw and can move your jaw back make your apnea worse. A FFM is more claustrophobic for many people. I can talk, sip water, eat, or take a pill with my nasal mask in place.

However, for those who have trouble with nasal masks, sometimes the FFM is the best answer.
