Sleep Study advice

Post by AfibApnea » Fri May 09, 2014 3:29 pm

Sleep study

I’m about to have my first/only sleep study. I get there at 9:30 PM…leave 6:30 AM the next morning.

- I’m supposed to bring loose pants/shirt (or 2-part pjs). Possibly a book (not a computer or tablet, interestingly…).

- I’ll be going off CPAP for 4 days to “bring things back to baseline”.

I’m concerned because normally I go to bed around 11 and wake up before 6 (6 -6.5 hr sleep)—I probably won’t be asleep all the time.

In order to get the most out of this experience, do you have any advice on how I should otherwise prepare myself?
For example, should I lead an extremely active day so that I am utterly exhausted when I get there?

If you get there at 9:30, by the time you are all hooked up, you won't get to bed untill 10:30 - 11;00. All they require to get a good reading is 3-4 hours sleep

Well, after being off Cpap x 4 days, you may not have a problem sleeping , but try not to nap that day if you can do that. And don't worry about not sleeping for the first hours because you'll still do enough afterward for them to get enough data on you... and most people say they 'didn't sleep all night' when in fact they got a fair amount, just didn't think so at the time!

Bring your own pillow and slippers if you have them. Keep your bare feet off the floor.

Best wishes.

I was apologizing to the sleep lab gal that I was not sleeping, she laughed and said I was sleeping and was in REM sleep to boot. I said it feels like I had not slept. I did not realize that so many other do the some thing. I did not think I was the only one but did not know so many others did the same thing.

as for pillows, where I live they forbid any sleep stuff, just PJs or shorts and tee shirt and your mask, also tooth brush and stuff like that you can bring. no pillows or blankets or any other thing, even not your bed partner. they supply every thing, from soaps to shampoos to, well every thing but tooth brush and PJs .

they give you a form and instructions, follow that and you will be fine.

The only thing I would suggest I something they will probably instruct anyway: don't use any caffeine on the day of your test. For me that was more than enough to guarantee I fell asleep almost instantly.

If you don't think you're sleepy enough, when they offer you the Ambien - take it.

On the question of your own pillow, do a Google search on "Sleep Study Prep"

Their are lots of sleep centers that post their instructions. Many say pillows are OK, others don't make any mention.
If you arrive with yours, at worst they will ask you to leave it in your car.

I received my packet in the mail today from the lab that will be testing me later this month; 22 pages of documents; 6 pages to fill out. I can bring my own bed pillows; a machine that generates white noise and the usual other stuff to use the next morning; toothbrush; toothpaste; meds to take the next morning; etc. They included a nice checklist of things I should do and not do during the day before I report to the lab for the first night of my 2 night study.

On my first study, I only slept 4 hours total with 1/2 hr gaps of awakening throughout. For the titration, I was only able to get 3. It was enough.

I'm amazed about the 22 page document steveorino got!

I was told NOT to take a computer (or a tablet) with me because use of these devices (unlike a book, for example) does not encourage sleep.
