Difference between Remstar 550HS & 560HS? help

Post by SleepingZ » Thu May 08, 2014 9:59 am

Hi,
I guess that I have to say that I am a pre-newbie, as I do not have a CPAP machine yet. I am doing trial #3 with the sleep clinic.
So far, my pulmonologist has recommended an Auto CPAP. I am looking at the Respironics System One REMstar Auto A-Flex with humidifier (as that is what I used for my 3 trials).
Does anyone understand the difference between model 550HS and 560HS? I just don't know which one I should order, and I can't afford to buy my unit from the sleep clinic that lends me a machine for trials at home.
Thanks

The main difference between the 550 an 560 is the 560 is the newest model and has the added heated hose option available.
Couple of other minor differences in features like the 60 series machines have a setting to turn off the beep when the machine starts up. Useful if you go to bed after your bed partner is already asleep so as to not potentially disturb them.

The 550 is the 50 series of machines first introduced in winter 2009/2010 and the 560 is the 60 series machine first introduced a couple of years ago mainly in response to the ResMed S9 competition which had a heated hose option.

Not all 560 machines will come with the heated hose option already in place but it is easy to add later if need be.
If you can get a 560...get it because it's better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it...and that heated hose can come in handy especially in the wintertime.
The 50 series machines can't be retro fitted to make them a 60 series machine but there are options available if it becomes apparent that a heated hose would be of benefit...like a hose cozy or a stand alone heated hose.
But the 60 series heated hose feature offers greater customization not only in air temperature going to the mask but in humidity delivery as well.

Unless there is a huge difference in price...get the 560..you won't be sorry. If you don't get one with a heated hose already included there is an upgrade kit available for about $75. The difference is a different lid on the humidifier, a heated hose vs standard hose and a power supply with 80 watts vs 60 watts without heated hose. The heated hose requires more power.

As far as therapy goes though...the 550 and 560 works the same in terms of how it addresses apnea events.
That part didn't change. So if money is really tight and you find a really good deal on a 550 there's nothing wrong with it.
You may not even miss the heated hose anyway and if you do there are options available to limit the problem. We did it that way for years before these new machines with heated hoses came out.
Me personally...the heated hose has spoiled me but other might not even care. After battling rain out for 3 winters and ice cube nose from the cold air going up my nose...the heated hose was a great benefit for me.

Thank you so much Pugsy, I really appreciate your detailed explanation about each machine. Now, I will know what the difference in quotes for each machine really means.
I think I would like to try that option of a heated hose for our long and cold winters up here. Last February, my respiratory tech told me just to keep the hose under the covers to stop the rain out.
