smartcard

I have a Respironics auto M series if I don't use the smartcard will the machine work the same ,I got the mahine used and when I turn it on the blue light on all three top buttons flashing with a beeping and on the screen I see a flashing card so I pulled out the card and the blue lights and beeping stopped flashing and the card on the screen went away ,could I have a bad smartcard , I don't know much about cpap machines it's my first one. any information would help ,Thank you

Yes, the machine will work fine without the smartcard inserted.

The problem you describe can happen if the smartcard is inserted wrong.
When looking at the back of the machine, the side of the smartcard that has the gold square
should be on your left as you are inserting it.
The card has an arrow to show you which end to insert first, but there is no indication whether
the gold square should be on your left or your right. It should be on your left.
