Other choices besides HC150 Heated Humidifier?

Post by NeedMoreSleep28 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:23 pm

Hi guys,

I've read up on the HC150 Heated Humidifier With Hose, 2 Chambers and Stand as seen at:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... ifier.html

As far as the reviews go, I doubt it will get me all the way through the night. Are there any other options for external heated humidifiers or failing that, something compatible with the PR System One?

I just need something that can keep a lot of moisture coming for the whole night because I dry out and wake up very easily.

Thanks!

I think the 2nd chamber is a spare. I think there is also a model with only 1 chamber too.

I think the HC150 will exceed your needs. Just connect the short 18" hose to the output of your humidifier (in series) and you will likely have to combat rainout until you get the settings right. You may have to use one humidifier in passover mode to avoid rainout.

You will need a place to set up both the HC150 and your PRS1 - maybe get a plastic container to use on the floor (so it doesn't suck up carpet fibers or other dirt).

The HC150 was the premier humidifier for many, many years.

fwiw - A room humidifier may also be helpful. Mouth breathing or leaks can also lead to dry mouth or excess water consumption.

I use this humidifier and was informed by my Respiratory Therapist that the water chambers are DISPOSABLE. Even using distilled water, my original chamber was pretty dirty and my attempts to clean it failed. They are supposed to be replaced monthly since they cannot be taken apart to be cleaned.

Someone here on the forum not long ago piggy backed the HC150 on to the PR S1 humidifier with success because of needing the moisture during the night and the PR S1 using up all the water and they didn't like getting up during the night to fill the tank.

Look for comments from JDS74. Note he did have to get a timer to turn the HC150 on around 3 AM. If not turned on then all it will do is passover mode.

Hi Pugsy:

I have finished my first round of experiments with the 150.
Turning on in early morning leaves it in pass-over mode for the first part of the night.
The consequence of that is rain-out becomes almost uncontrollable. The humid air from the CPAP immediately drops in temperature and you get rain-out no matter what you do with your hose.
So, to make it work as an exrension of water capacity, you need to reduce the humidity level in your primary humidifier AND turn on the HC150 right away with a low level set in the unit.
That gives you lower humidity coming from the CPAP humidifier and a secondary increase from the 150.
The result is a reasonable humidity level all night and neither tank goes dry.

The numbers used require some experimentation but the HC150 number needs to be quite low or its like breathing in a sauna. Turn the 150 up very much and you get to nearly 100% RH. All this depends on your particular room temp and room humidity. Mileage will vary.

I have not noticed any build-up in the 150 tank but I dump all water every day and use only actual distilled water. Although the tank is sealed from opening, the two inlets are sufficient to ket you rinse with vinegar, etc. if needed.
I thought about building my own pass-over tank but now I have had experience with the HC150 in tandem pass-over mode, I'm glad I didn't waste the time.

I would recommend this combination if your main humidifier tank runs dry during the night.
Hope this is of some help.

You can buy a more permanent water chamber for this humidifier. I didn't use the 2 that came with it for very long, when I was using this humidifier with my Intellipap auto. The permanent one is sold separately and does last much longer. I did always use distilled water. I kept it set very low or in passive mode since I don't need much humidity. The water lasted a long time for me but then I didn't have it set high. The permanent one can be taken apart for cleaning but it is difficult. I could clean it quite well without taking it apart and only took it apart rarely.
