But what about reliable EEGs while you're sleeping? (The old Zeo is not really a reliable EEG for doing real polysomnogram work.) Without the EEG data, there is no way to reliably tell when you're asleep and when you're awake. You can infer wakes and arousals from data gathered from an accelerometer, but that's really just a gross approximation for the EEG data itself. Still the data from an accelerometer could be used to get the larger picture of how many wakes you have each night, and that's not useless.
Data from an accelerometer won't be able to tease out REM sleep, however. For reliably detecting REM sleep, you'll also need a way to track eye movements as well as the EEG data. And maybe a way to track muscle movements it the jaw as well.
And again, you'll need that EEG data to figure out Stage III (slow wave sleep).
And what about the sensors for detecting periodic limb movements? They may or may not be large enough to pick up with an infrared camera.
I'm not saying it can't be done, but I am saying that some of the needed equipment is NOT cheap, easy to find or easy to build.
the data base was to include every bit of data we can get, not just pure polysomnogram data but all data we can get our hands on. events and flow rate and pressures and all the other data form the guys that have data capable machines. the idea is to look through data and look for patterns, find anything that could help in finding cheap and simple ways to determine whatever. the idea is to find correlations of things, both in data from one person to spanning a multitude of peoples data. look for simple thing and work up. also I was thinking we could manufacture some testing gear so data can be collected from a large number of people that do not have sleep problems. in fact it would be nice to have power sleepers data to see what goes on with them. it was just a idea, I used to design manufacture electronics and know a thing or 2 about it. could setup small scale production line and start popping them out. I would donate all stuff on my end all we need to do is buy parts and supplies. if would allow data rats to make programs looking for anything that could help. I am just throwing out ideas. I am not trying to be a pain here in fact the exact opposite, but can charge in much harder then would be prudent to do. I do go over the top most time when I getting into something.

non profit open source, try to get as many guys working and new idea as possible I am just one small part, every one can play a role, from supplying data to raising awareness of sleep disorders. there is a ton of ways to go and a ton of things to be done. pick a spot and jump in. hope it get a life of its own and really take off.
robysue wrote:Why would any person who does NOT have sleep apnea chose to sleep using a CPAP for several nights??
I can't even get people who think they might have OSA to even consider trying on a mask for a few minutes, let alone sleep with the dang thing all night long ....
no machines for the people that do not have sleep problems, just a small wearable device that I would hope is wireless. it will be a pain for them so they will have to have some reason to do it. it should be doable.
we will need to experiment and see what works and what does not. small steps and find simple easy solutions to problems. we are not looking for sweet spots or bang for the buck. just plain simple answers to better deal with all this, one thing good would be doc training, seem they did not get enough of the right training. we should find some way to get docs up to speed and to know what to look for, read the signs of sleep disorders. there is a PR person that offered to help. she maybe able to put some thought into doc training and how to get it to them in a way that works. like I said I am just throwing stuff out there. all I know is things need to get better.
