mouth breather

Post by Aunkster » Sat Apr 05, 2014 9:12 am

ok I'm sure this topic has been beat to death and then some,I've tried everything ,tape mouth closed at night, chin straps..you name i tried ,i think the time has come for me to go to a full face mask.
From research I have done it seems like there isn't a very comfortable one out there, thats why i come to you for help.
Anyone here who uses a full face mask please let me know what kind may be very comfortable.

I now know i can't change my mouth breathing habits

Thanks

Take a look at the Innomed Hybrid FFM -- they call it an FFM as you are seeking but really it is a combination of a nasal pillow and an oral mask.

You could even blank off the pillow holes (tape or silicone cement) and use it as a straight oral mask.

I like mine which was purchased to act as a backup for my Airift P10 should my nose get too stopped up to breath easily through it.

There are lots of good ones - you just need to find 'yours', properly sized and fitted by someone patient who allows you to lie down somewhere (because faces change when you do that) and give them a decent trial in diff. positions, etc. Often what happens is that people unused to FFMs will 'suit up', lie down and touch nothing, not understanding that it's a good idea once mask is on and air's started, to slightly lift the mask (just a tiny bit) to allow the cushion to inflate - not so much of an issue with nasal masks - and then to maybe pull down (again, just a tiny bit) or wiggle the mask to get it in place better, help seal tiny areas that might otherwise allow air into your eyes, etc. It requires a bit of tweaking is all, but also finding the right one to begin with. I can't imagine sleeping any other way and have done this for years!

Everyone using a FF mask will consider theirs the favorite. Everyone's face is different and the mask I am comfortable with may be terrible for you. It is just a matter of trying one for a few nights and see how it goes. In my opinion, a full face mask is far more comfortable than taping or using a chin strap.

There is always the Oracle 2 oral mask that works nicely for mouth breathers.

As mentioned already, masks are very personal, so it will help to try out different masks and see what works best for you. I have the Resmed Quattro FX, and I am very happy with it. I got my first one in APril 2012 and the second one in April 2013. I have bought new cushions over time, but I still use the same two masks. Sometimes, I wake up and forget that it is on.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

It's going to mostly be trial and error. I used to used a Quattro FX and it works well but I would get a leak in the same spot on the side of my nose. I also tried the Quattro Air. That leaked in the same spot as the FX. I switched to F&P Simplus and it works better for me.

I have tried nasal masks and if I'm tired enough they'll work for me but I have to be tired enough that I stop thinking about my breathing and my nose has to be clear. That doesn't usually happen at the same time so I stick with the FFM.

I have the F&P Simplus as well, and like it pretty much. I've only been on CPAP since the last day of 2013. I have had to resort to taping my mouth though because of dry mouth. The chin strap only cut into my chin and I was still able to get my mouth open.
