S8 Auto Vantage APAP and Efficacy Data

Post by jsmott » Fri Jun 30, 2006 5:26 pm

I own the ResMed S8 Auto Vantage. I find this APAP unit much more comfortable than the Remstar CPAP unit that I was using. Took some doing, but I even got my insurance provider to cover the S8 ( Kaiser Permanente ). Have a question: now that I know how to access the "Efficacy Data" recorded from the previous night usage session could someone tell how to interpret the data. 5 readings are displayed: Press, Leak, AhI, AI, and HI. Pressure makes sense - this shows the highest pressure reached during the night ( 9.8 with me last night ). With Leak I'm sure the lower the number the better, but what does the L/s signify? ( My leak reading using the Swift Nasal Pillow system was .66 last night - Is this good? ). However, I don't know what AHI, AI, and HI mean. My values were AHI - 9.3, AI - 2.5, and HI - 6.8. It would be just great if anyone could make sense of all this for me.

AI=Apnea Index, number of apnea events divided by 60 (avg. per hour)
HI=Hypoapnea Index, number of Hypoapneas divided by 60 (avg. per hour)
AHI=Number of Apnea +Hypoapnea events added together then divided by 60 for avg. per hour.

These averages are for the last session, sessions restart each day at noon. If you slept for 8-hours, that is the session. If you navigate through the SmartData, it will show you day for last session, week or month and even 6 months.

Having 5 events per hour is considered Normal or what a person has if they don't have OSA.

Leak=Litre per second. Look in your Owners manual, it is listed there, you should have 5 stars for mask leak which is Excellent.

A lot of this information is included in your User Manual, descriptions are contained in the Clinical manual.

As for your data:
My values were AHI - 9.3, AI - 2.5, and HI - 6.8. It would be just great if anyone could make sense of all this for me.
AI=2.5 you have an avg. of 2.5 Apneas per hour.
HI=6.8 you have an agg. of 6.8 Hypoapneas per hour.
AHI= is derrived by adding the above 2 events together and then you have a resulting AHI=9.3

If your sleeping fine, I would do nothing. But you could probably see some even lower numbers by increasing your low or bottom pressure by .5-1cm.

Data

Post by GoofyUT » Fri Jun 30, 2006 6:14 pm

Just a few other clarifications re: your data-

Your leak rate of 0.66L/s is HUGE and needs to be addressed right away. It is a measure of the leakage beyond what the S8 is expecting for the bias (or designed in exhaust leakage) for whatever mask you have set in the Mask menu. It is important that you have the correct mask selected, and that you address your leakage since I've been told that leakage ABOVE 0.40L/s will degrade the machine's ability to accurately control pressures to treat your sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) during the night. So, find out what's causing the leak and fix it. I often have leak stats of 0.00L/s, and usually run at 0.10L/s or below. BTW, L/s stands for "Liters/second."

Your pressure reading is the 95% pressuire, or the pressure that your S8 operated at OR BELOW 95% of the time during your last sleep session.

Hope this helps.

High Leakage With Nasal Pillow?

Post by Guest » Fri Jun 30, 2006 9:29 pm

Chuck, Thanks for clarifying the efficacy data for me. I'm wondering if the high leak rate that I'm experiencing is due to the fact that I occasionally catch myself breathing through my mouth while using the nasal pillow system. Could be I'm breathing through my mouth far more than I realize. Might be that I need a different mask. Perhaps a full face type or maybe the new hybrid.

Mouth breathing

Post by GoofyUT » Fri Jun 30, 2006 9:34 pm

Mouth-breathinbg is a HUGE issue with ANY nasal interface, and it plagues many here (I've been spared). So YES, it could definitely be the cause or a contributing factor to your high leakage stats.

Ask here, or do a search using mouth-breathing as the key word. You'll find TONS of help, support and suggestions right here.

No perhaps about it. You must get the leaks under control either tape or get the new mask. Otherwise, your therapy isn't therapy.
