Info-Leak Rate Resmed S8

Post by ufo13 » Thu Jun 29, 2006 4:52 pm

Refenence the LEAK RATE reported on the S8, many of us wanted to know how it was to be interpeted and I called Resmed and got the following answer from Susie Justus LVN a Clinical Patient Advocate at Resmed:

The algorithm already takes into account "intentional leak". So the leak you are reading is either from mask or mouth leak.

Best to all,

Thanks Steve, so what is the range of leaks that are acceptable as normal? I sure appreciate it!

vicinsb:

It is my understanding that a leak rate over L=0.40 is when the algothrim and the resulting data start to become less effecient! The star (mask fit) rating is an entirely different figure. THE LEAK RATE IS A 95% centile rating but the mask fit star rating is a 70% average figure also related to the amount of time you are in a leak for a certain percentage of the night!

Hope this helps,

Steve,

yikes! I can't get my leak rate below 0.6 no matter what I do!
I don't think the problem is with the Swift mask (according to the maskfit feature and because I rarely seem to detect mask leaks now). I think my problem is mouth leaks. It seems I've tried everything and nothing seems to bring down the leak rate. I tried the tape and couldn't tolerate that -- it irritated my skin and the tape got so wet from sweat/drool that it leaked. Now I use a chin strap and poligrip strips which seems to work OK but the leak rate is still >0.6. If I'm sleeping lightly, I can feel air puffing out around the strips.
I really don't want to go to a fullface mask. Maybe that new hybrid mask is the route for me (?).
This is frustrating.
Meanwhile, I'm slowly trying to decrease my max pressure setting (now at 13) to see if that helps.
Sigh.....

looking at the Clinical manual:

***** (Excellent) - 0.00-0.009 L/s
****_ (Very Good) - 0.10-0.19 L/s
***_ _ (Good) - 0.20-0.29 L/s
**_ _ _ (Adjust mask) - 0.30-0.39 L/s
*_ _ _ _ (Adjust mask) - 0.40-0.49 L/s
HIGH LEAK message >0.50 L/s
(adjust mask)

Thanks Snoredog...my numbers have been around .10 L/S all week, except for 1 night of .38 L/S. I guess its safe to assume I had some extra mouth breathing or mask adjustment that night.
Its really helpful to see the clinical numbers, thank you!
