Almost ruined my CPAP again

Post by JimT » Wed Mar 05, 2014 7:10 am

Hello,

I have a Resmed autoset S9 that is about 2 years old (i have only been treated for OSA for that time). So my machine has had a couple of tumbles in that time . I figured out a way to stop it happenning again by installing a little wooden border around my dresser. This has worked a treat by stopping it from slipping off, until tonight. I sometimes side sleep and tonight I turned over a bit too fast and little did I realize the mask tubing was wrapped around my arm, this flung the machine fast over the wooden border luckily onto my soft pillow. It seems to still work and didn't even stop working the whole time. Does any one have any tips for keeping a long tube from tangling in the bed? I often get tangled but this is the first time the machine has flew from it. I am not in a financial position right now to just go and buy another one if this one breaks. Thanks in advance

Hello Jim,
I think I would try some velcro under the machine, maybe that would keep it in place. Just a thought...

I use a combination of a hose hanger to suspend the hose straight up and keep it out of the way of my flailing arms and a Velcro tie to attach the hose to my bed so that any movement gets stopped at the bed post.
Hose hangers can be purchased via our hosts and also by way of Amazon and other places.
Since I travel a little, I opted for one in which a travel bag was included.

Get a hose hanger! Either construct a home made type or buy one. I got mine when I would lie on my hose, start to turn over and rip up the hose. I am amazed at why forum folks do not use hose hangers. I've said it 100 times... it has been the best cpap investment I've made and I kick myself for putting off getting a hose hanger as long as I did.

Generally it is recommended that the CPAP machine sits lower than the mattress. When you mentioned "dresser". I picture something much higher than the mattress. When your machine "slips off" your dresser, water from the humidifier can ruin the insides of your machine even if the drop causes no harm.

I have a hose hanger for travel; at home, I have a home made set-up.
I also woke up with the hose under me, and destroyed two hoses before I got smart.

Old, thick mouse pads......rubberized "shelf liner" (available in rolls at Wally World)......also in a version for putting under throw/area rugs.......put under the machine and it won't be readily pulled off the night stand.
Maybe a shorter hose? How long is the one you're using and what length do you actually "need"?

I have my machine on a plastic step stool lower than my mattress so I can't pull it anywhere. Take it off your dresser or night stand and save room by putting it down lower. Not on the floor but a child's plastic stool works perfectly!

My two cents worth: The hose hanger is the way to go. I've tried duct taping the sucker down, using wires, wooden rails and even velcro... nothing esle works IMO, but a hose hanger. If you need more hose length you can always get an 18 inch hose extension for under fifteen bucks from our host, CPAP.com. That should set you up with enough hose for even a King size bed.

sleeplessinaz: That's a good idea but unfortunately you're going to lose another six inches or more of useful hose length... not too bad if you've got a small bed or sleep in the same spot all night, but otherwise a big loss on an already too short hose.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I agree that a hose hanger is the way to go and if you need a short hose between your mask and the main hose this is what I use https://www.cpap.com/productpage/circad ... -tube.html it's nice and flexable.

Ditto the hose hanger. One of the best CPAP accessories you'll make: http://www.cpapsupplyusa.com/0403-Arden ... MgodJ0wAfQ or, if you good with your hands and metal, make one. In addition to using in the bedroom, I take it with me when I travel. When it was time to order supplies, I asked for the 10 footer. Don't have any problems now.

Those hose hangers won't work for those of us that have a newer bedframe. I have a platform bed with wood sides. It says on the link to stick the hose hanger under your matress,

If you need to get the hose overhead and travel use http://www.officedepot.ca/cable-managem ... 17304c.asp and a girls ponytail thingy. I use one at home and one is in my bag for travel to my favorite destinations. I haven't damaged a wall yet and been using it several years.

A hose hangar is not an option when you sleep on the floor like I do.
