Looking for recommendations from actual userss

Post by sleeplessinsd » Mon Mar 03, 2014 11:22 am

Hi, been with out my machine for 5 days and really starting to feel the effects
I have to get a new machine the Respironics M star a-flex 60's series bit the dust. I don't have insurance so its all out of my rapidly dwindling shrinking pocket that has a hole in it. I don't know much a bot machines I could spend up to about 1000 but I'll be eating ramein noodles for 2 months
I Need one that has a-flex and heated humidifier.
so here are some of the candidates :
De Vilbiss Intellipap
Res med s-9
respiroincs system one with aflex and humidifier

I am open to any suggestions too. Thanks

If you are really hurting for funds you could check Craigslist....otherwise go to secondwindcpap.com
The resmed or resperonics would be my choice

As a Devilbiss Intellipap user, you should be aware of the fact that the basic machine only provides reports via a code that you type into an Internet web page to get very basic compliance and AHI data. If you want detailed results, you have to also purchase the SmartLink option and even then you do not get the data resolution provided by Respironics and ResMed units. The issue is that the SmartLink unit only records once every ~5minutes.

On the plus side, the Devilbiss unit is very portable and has worked quite well for both my wife and I.

If you are paying out of pocket with no insurance involved DO NOT USE A DME!!!! You can purchase a new unit online from a vendor like our hosts, CPAP.com for far less than a DME would charge you. Or, if you're willing to go the used route, as LSAT suggests you might do well with secondwind.com or Cragslist (buyer beware). Watch this forum because sometimes members sell their older or second units.

I'm new at this, so correct me if I'm wrong. From what I've read on this forum about the two favored machines (The ResMed S9 and the Respironics 560) they both have pluses and minuses, but both do a good job and report full data and the Respironics is a little bit cheaper since money is a factor.

Do not accept any S8 unit unless you can get (and afford) the proprietary card reader.
All the S9 and newer Philips-Respironics models use regular SD cards,
which can be read with regular card readers and often through the slot on a computer.
The card from my Autoset will plug into my Acer Aspire One netbook via a cheap SD to USB adapter,
and my netbook runs Sleepyhead. I love Sleepyhead. Mark is awesome!

Why do you have to get a NEW machine?
There is no such machine you mentioned. If you have a "60 Series" machine, it should be under warranty.
But, if you have the "M Series" machine and are in "financial stress", you might find a replacement in this link. It's on the second page right now with the title "CPAPs-for-sale"

Hi, I just bought a S9 Auto with low hours off craigs list(in my town)...very reasonable 400.00. I just looked at San Diego craigs list and there are several good price deals in your area. Would at least be able to go see them, just a thought...way under your 1000 limit.

Three years ago I went from a Respironics Remstar "M" Series to a System One and I found the System One even easier to setup and use than the M series. You can use the same tube and mask. There are quite a few System One's on Craigslist. If they don't know how many blower hours it has, tell them to plug it in and turn the dial to "Info" and push the button. Then turn the dial to "Phone-In" and push the button. Voila! Blower hours is right there.

system one
resmed s-9

de vilbiss

what else should I look at on these > Heated humidifier? etc.
Of those I assume they will all be better than the M serires with aflex that I had . Is this true?

so what are the pros and cons of each?

Until you get a machine, starting tonight, make sure you do not sleep on your back - wear a backpack with some hardback books in it if you have to. Sleep on your sides or stomach.

Get a soft spinal collar and wear it while sleeping.

These two actions might lower the severity of your apnea.

Narrow your choices to the S9 or PR System One machines.

Each of your 4 choices has a different sort of exhale relief and the only one that works like your AFlex exhale relief is the PR System One.

Software for the S9 and PR S1 machines is free and easy to obtain and use and the data shown is more comprehensive with the S9 or PR S1.

Each brand has it's own take on what exhale relief is the "best" and you might not like their "best".
I would suggest that you stick with what you know works well...the Respironics machine...you are used to it and like it (I assume).
I have used both the M Series with AFlex...the PR System One Auto with AFlex and the S9 which uses EPR (which is totally different...still a great form of exhale relief but it is different)

The new models (S9 AutoSet and PR S1 Auto CPAP) now have heated hoses with their heated humidifiers...it's a toss up. You would do well with either.

If your pressures are over 12 cm...you might look at the S9 closer...EPR is especially nice at the higher pressures because the drop during exhale is more dramatic than AFlex drop.
