CPAP and Oxygen

Post by Cr1kk1t » Thu Feb 27, 2014 9:22 pm

I just had an overnight oximetry done while wearing my cpap. And the results were bad. My doctor will be back in town tomorrow and will be sending an order for 2L of oxygen at night.

Length : 7 hours 36 minutes
56% of the night was <89.
15.9% <85.
3.6% <80
Basal was 88.6
low was 73

How do they hook oxygen into your cpap?

Generally it's added in at the machine with a one way valve (which goes between your hose and machine) with a nipple on it for the oxygen tubing. I haven't been around the forum much lately so not familiar with your situation, is you pap therapy optimized (ie. AHI below ~5) and your leaks minimized??
Canada...I can't say anything nice, so I won't say anything at all.

Thank you for the reply.
Oh I wish it was but unfortunately I rarely get below 5, but I can't turn up my pressure anymore due to centrals increasing. I currently have it set at 8 - 10 with Aflex 1. I usually have very few leaks.

Most likely they will add a fitting like this:

A connector like that would have to connect close to my mask since I have a heated hose that connects to my humidifier.

While I think the usual way to add O2 is at the humidifier level I believe that O2 can be added at the other end of the hose. You might want to think about something to secure the little O2 tubing so it moves in tandem with the long hose...maybe some sort of plastic zip tie thing. Don't want it too tight to crush the little tube but having it tied to the long hose would lessen the chance of it getting caught up in something.

A better adaptor has a check valec and vent built in so the O2 doesn't go back into the XPAP when it's turned off or power fails. I too would be concerned about the quality of your XPAP treatment, optomizing it with the software is a must. I doubt the O2 is going to bring it in range, something isn't correct. Jim

During the warm months I use a one way valve and attach the O2 to the humidifier. During the cold months I use the heater hose and attach the O2 port at the mask end of the hose.

Be sure to follow the proper safety precautions. There is some real risk of fire with oxygen if done wrong. For instance, something like vaseline on the face might catch fire with oxygen.
