full mask question

Post by bostonlass » Wed Jun 28, 2006 7:30 am

I've just been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I guess within 6 hours I stopped breathing 33 times...don't know if that's mild or extreme but it's me.

Anyhoo.....I breathe when I sleep mostly through my mouth due to allergies and I was just thinking, if I get the mask that covers both the nose and the mouth.......well I drool.....won't I drown?

If you mouth breathe - and try a nasal interface - and tape, the tape will get soggy and wet - I know - I am using a full face mask now and still slobber a bit and the only thing that I have to do is wash the mask every day instead of once a week per the directions - good luck!

I've used only a full-face mask since I started therapy about a month ago. I'm also a mouth breather much of the time -- especially at night -- and my experience has been that my mouth tends to get pretty dry during the night, so slobbering hasn't been much of an issue. Of course I keep my humidifier setting pretty low (1).

Even so, I wash the mask thoroughly every day!

I use a full face mask, and slobbering or mouth breathing isn't an issue LOL It's funny. When I use a nasal mask, my mouth pops open. The minute I have a full face one on, the mouth stays closed...hence...no drooling

Fear not; you will do fine with a full face mask. Just remember it takes some time to get used to.

Full Face Mask

I have used a full fac mask since starting with a CPAP (actually APAP) about 2 1/2 years ago. I would be surprised that you could drool enough to drown. As has previously been mentioned I just clean the mask regularly. In answer to your question about the red marks - Absolutely I get them, but now that I use a piece of cotton felt on each side they disapper about 20 minutes after waking up now. Hang in there - My first two weeks were miserable but I hung in there and adapted fairly quickly after that.

Sometimes but they go away quickly.

Well I don't have it yet and I go for the second sleep study where they put me on the cpap machine so I'm not really sure which they'll try me on. I'm assuming full face since they must have noticed that I am a mouth breather.

Thanks for the info!
