Swift FX over 10?

Post by TiredMomNY » Mon Feb 17, 2014 2:48 pm

Hi all,

I am making decisions on my next mask. I am thinking of going with the Resmed Swift FX for her with the Bella straps.

I do hear that if you have a pressure over 10 (mine is 12) that the pressure up into your nose might be too strong. Any thoughts before I purchase it.

Thanks!!

You heard wrong, there are folks on here that have pressures up to 20 (Pugsy is one) and still use pillow masks.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I successfully used the Swift FX AND with the Bella Loops on APAP with pressures pushing 18 often.
I liked the Bella Loops. My only issue with it was my left ear...sometimes the loop wouldn't stay in the little groove like it was supposed to and would slip out and fold my ear down and pinch it.
Not sure why it was just the left ear.

Somewhere someone in the DME office came up with this stupid idea that people using higher pressures couldn't use any nasal pillow...and that is total hogwash.

Now some people simply don't like the air going up the nose and they don't like it at 5 cm either but that is personal preference and not necessarily the fault of the nasal pillow.

I did my sleep study titration with nasal pillow mask despite the tech saying "you will hate them" and in the AM admitted I was the first person that he knew who actually used them at all. Stuff comes out of their mouth that has no basis on fact.

It does feel different though...that air going up your nose. but most people do well with it or they wouldn't be so popular.

I use a WISP now so it all goes up my nose anyway. Especially when the ramp is over and it's on 12. So I will give it a try. I'm hoping the Bella straps work. I love my WISP but I love my hair more!! Darn straps.

It will feel different than the Wisp and its air feels.

First time I used a nasal cushion (over the nose) mask it was the Wisp, and then I tried the Nano.
To me the Wisp and Nano felt like the air was leaking all around my nose and it wasn't leaking at all.
Took me just a little bit to get used to the diffused feeling surrounding my nose.

The nasal pillows and the air going up the nose..will feel different.
Some people find it is unpleasant and don't like it at all.
When you try it..do it while awake for a little bit and start off with lower pressure just to get you used to it.

It doesn't feel the same as the Wisp does.

Just a different experience. I assumed I could not used the pillow or nasal masks because I have a deviated septum. I finally gave them a try just to verify my experience and lo and behold, they both work well. In fact for me, its kind of nice having that extra push of air going up my nostril. I feel like I am finally breathing through my nose.

I'm gonna give it a try. What the heck. Once I fall asleep it's all good. So I use the ramp and reset it a few times if needed to reduce pressure. Once I am out, game on.

During my titration study using a swift fx, the technician was running at 13 cmH2O by the end of the study. Mask worked fine. In fact, I keep the straps slightly on the loose side. My Rx is 9 cmH2O and I've had no issues with the mask as long as I check that I haven't inadvertently pushed the inner nostril nozzles inside out (I once did this by accident when cleaning the mask and had all sorts of issues until I had discovered what I had done.)

Right now I have my machine somewhere between 13cm and 14cm and it's absolutely fine for the Bella loops.

Just be aware you might need to tighten the top a notch on each side compared to when it's on your face but no pressure added. (I seriously just need the top a little, but the bottom left alone.) And if you use hose snuggies, you might prefer the traditional headgear over the loops due to the weight of the fleece. I use the hose snuggies and the traditional headgear only when it's super cold though.

Bella loops are helping my hair a lot. <3 Poor curly hair kept getting tangled in everything else. Ouch.

Quick comment, been using the Swift FX for over 2 years now. My pressure was 10-14, and the mask was fine. It's now 11-13, and still fine *smile*.

So need to worry, just give it a try.
