Unpredictable mask leaks

Post by Snufkin » Sat Feb 08, 2014 4:28 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm another one having problems with mask leaks. I use a full face mask, size medium (which mulitple technicians have told me looks like the perfect size for me), with mask liners, BPAP, quite low pressure. After months of aggravation solving one stupid problem after another, I finally got to where I was sleeping through for 6 or 7 hours with the mask on. Now suddenly I'm getting woken up after a couple hours by irritating leaks around my nose. I adjust my mask, put my head back on the pillow, everything's fine, then as I start to relax into sleep it starts leaking again. I am insanely frustrated, because this wasn't a problem until a couple of nights ago.

It's happened to me a few other times too over the past several months, a mask leak that I can't seem to fix (i.e. it's not a momentary thing, it seems to persist no matter what I do, at least for that night). Then one night I put it on and there's no problem and I'm back on track, then at some point it's back again.

Any clues or ideas? The randomness of this is crazy-making!

It could be time to change the mask cushion. How long have you had it?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Ah, good thought. I've had it about five months. It still looks in good shape, but perhaps one can't tell by looking? I actually have a spare cushion that I haven't used yet, I could try swapping it out and see if it does the trick.

Ditto. It should be noted that all new Quattro masks and even the cushions can be expensive. If your finances (or other readers finances) are strapped you/they could try boiling the cushion (and only the cushion) with baking soda. Some people claim doubling the life of the cushion or more. Otherwise, new mask time. Try this link about boiling cushions for info:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

If you've lost weight, that could definitely make a difference.
