Re: Melatonin As A Sleep Aid - Experiences & Dosage??
Something I left out from my previous long reply:
There's a big difference between the 'sub-lingual' variety and 'swallow whole' pills. You dissolve sub-lingual pills under your tongue and they almost immediately deliver the full potency of the pill directly into your blood stream thru the blood capillaries under your tongue. The 'swallow whole pills' go thru your stomach and take as long as an hour to reach your blood stream, thereby being somewhat diluted in the process. The brand I recommended above are sub-lingual and work very fast (they are a bit more expensive too). The reason I like this brand of sub-lingual pills is that they work very fast and it appears (having tried both types) that I need to take less melatonin in the overall process.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I tried it when I was struggling to sleep before going on CPAP and found it had about the same effect as eating a Smartie or a Cheerio at bedtime. Pretty much useless for me but YMMV.

Hey Bob. With my previous ill advised large dosages, I had the same poor results before and after CPAP, however I think you might give the new low-dose melatonin recommendations another 'go round'. That being said... If your current CPAP therapy is perfect as-is, then it's probably not necessary. Go with what works, I always saySleepyBobR wrote:I tried it when I was struggling to sleep before going on CPAP and found it had about the same effect as eating a Smartie or a Cheerio at bedtime. How do we get "pharmaceutical grade" melatonin? Or any other otc pills, for that matter?

These are the ones that I started with, also sublingual, but only 1mg, so easier to make into .5mg, if that's what you want to do:Sir NoddinOff wrote: This works fine... I just bite 'em in pieces approximately 0.5mg in size. No need to be precise. Here's a brand I trust and have used for a quite awhile:

A BIG bonus is that the bottle lasts a LONG time if you bite them in 0.5mg pieces (approximately)

Those are the ones that I'd use if I wasn't using the .3mg (300mcg) ones.

If you have access to Trader Joe's, they sell a peppermint flavored chewable melatonin in a 500 MCG dose. I swear by them. They don't make me groggy, but they help me doze off.

Its called research. Those few companies that adhere to pharmacutical grade manufacturing practices will brag about it.It requires significantly more effort through out the manufacturing process. From the detailed instruction, to cleanliness to qa.
Often you will find they will be Canadian companies where government requirements are more stringent.

Sir Nod
Thanks for input & to other posters for their insights.
Sub-lingual - You say they work very fast - what time of the evening do you take them?

Re: Melatonin As A Sleep Aid - Experiences & Dosage??
My nightly routine is basically like this: First I brush my teeth and use my Interplax machine (a Waterpik sort of device). Next I lightly shave around the area where my Quattro FFM rests, then I put a little less than a quarter of the Source Naturals 3.0mg melatonin pill under my tongue... the one I recommended above (with the URL link). No need to brush your teeth again because there's no sugar in them. Next I mask-up and lay down. Usually within 10-20 minutes I'm asleep. It's as simple as that.95C4 wrote: Sir Nod

That's certainly a good option and a bit easier than my method, however I've got a LOT of the 3.0mg pills to use up first! They seem to work just fine at this point.RogerSC wrote:These are the ones that I started with, also sublingual, but only 1mg, so easier to make into .5mg, if that's what you want to do:Sir NoddinOff wrote: This works fine... Re: Melatonin As A Sleep Aid - Experiences & Dosage??
My CPAP therapy isn't perfect. My AHI is usually between 3 and 5 because I have lowered my pressure to reduce bloating. I have no trouble going to sleep though so I don't use any sleep aids. I usually can't finish more than one page of my book before conking out. I do wake up a few times a night but always go back to sleep quickly. I am not tired during the day unless I stay up too late and just don't sleep long enough.Sir NoddinOff wrote:Hey Bob.
